Corey Corbin served in the New Hampshire House of Representatives from 2000-2004, where he held the leadership position of Majority Committee Whip. If the four men vying for the right to challenge President Barack Obama as the Republican Party’s nominee are to be believed, our nation is facing the apocalypse should Obama be re-elected.

Every malady we are currently facing has been gleefully blamed on Obama and, to some degree, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. From high unemployment and the banking collapse, to an increasingly aggressive (and potentially nuclear armed) Iran and out of control illegal immigration – Obama has either caused it all, or done nothing about it.

What, then, are the solutions offered up by these would-be chief executives of our great nation? If you’re watching the plethora of debates that have been popping up like spring flowers over the airwaves, you know that their offerings are anemic, at best.

Let’s take the current front-runner, Former US House Speaker Newt Gingrich, for example. Gingrich has been spending a lot of time on Florida’s space coast, in advance of that state’s primary, letting everyone know that under his administration, we will have a permanently manned base on the moon. Yes, you read that correctly, a permanent moon base. So while Obama, according to the GOP candidates, plays too much golf while the country crumbles, their (the GOP) front-runner is busy planning the construction of a Ramada Inn on the moon.

Not to be outdone, the former Massachusetts Governor, Mitt Romney, says he would handle illegal immigration by turning the problem over to VISA and MasterCard. Huh? Yes, that’s correct. Romney thinks illegals should be documented by a card administered by VISA and MasterCard. So now we want our immigration woes to be handled by some of the very companies that prey on those illegal immigrants by offering super-high interest rate and bad credit - credit cards. Well that makes sense!

And just to remind us he’s not as insignificant as we know he is, former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum thinks we should just chase illegal immigrants down with giant fishing nets and send them all back where they came from: apparently all 11-odd million of them (I think Santorum was overheard saying he would allow the KKK to administer his immigration policy). Santorum also wants to invade Iran, Venezuela, Columbia, Honduras, Mexico, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Yemen, Somalia, and any US State that allows gay marriage.

Finally we come to the one GOP candidate who, in my humble, democrat opinion, makes the most sense when talking about the issues – Texas Representative Ron Paul. The good doctor (he is a licensed MD) is always clear, concise, well thought, and understands the Constitution and the basic principles this nation was founded upon.

Perhaps my favorite Ron Paul moment, however, was his answer when asked in the last debate why he thought his wife would make a great First Lady. He looked right into the camera and said “well, she published a great cook book.”

So there you have it, folks. You can decide to cast a vote to send back to the oval office a pragmatic, steadfast champion of the average American, Barack Obama, or you can cheer wildly for the alternative: moon bases, VISA-gration, invading every other country in the known world, and the Ron Paul cook book.

There's no gentle way to put it: People who give in to racism and prejudice may simply be dumb, according to a new study that is bound to stir public controversy.

The research finds that children with low intelligence are more likely to hold prejudiced attitudes as adults. These findings point to a vicious cycle, according to lead researcher Gordon Hodson, a psychologist at Brock University in Ontario.

Low-intelligence adults tend to gravitate toward socially conservative ideologies, the study found. Those ideologies, in turn, stress hierarchy and resistance to change, attitudes that can contribute to prejudice. Full story here!

In an op-ed published in the New Hampshire Union Leader on Thursday, former Republican National Committee Chair Ken Mehlman urged state lawmakers to vote against a bill that would repeal the Granite State’s marriage equality law.

"Stripping away the right of adults in New Hampshire to marry the person they love is antithetical to freedom," wrote Mehlman, who chaired then-President George W. Bush’s 2004 re-election campaign.

Starbucks, Google and Alcoa are the latest large corporations to endorse legalizing gay marriage in Washington, according to the group Washington United for Marriage, which backs the legislation.

Microsoft, Nike and Group Health Plan have already endorsed the legislation, which picked up the 25th and final vote needed in the state Senate for pass the law.

One researcher noted: "A confidential testing option such as self-testing could bring an end to the stigmatization associated with HIV testing." Some mental health experts have long advised against home HIV testing because of the danger of self-harm upon a positive result. HIV-Infected Man Fights to Become Atlanta Officer

A former investigator with the city of Los Angeles claims Atlanta police rejected his job application solely because he has HIV, a decision he said breaks the law and perpetuates stereotypes about people with the virus.

Atlanta police argue hiring the man poses a threat to the health and safety of the public, setting up a legal fight that is being followed closely by gay rights groups and police agencies.

A federal appeals court is scheduled to hear arguments in the case Wednesday, and judges will have the chance to pepper both sides with questions.

"It’s shocking and frustrating and very saddening that in 2012 this is still going on," said the 40-year-old man who sued the city of Atlanta in 2010 under the pseudonym Richard Roe. “We can either settle for a country where a shrinking number of people do really well, while a growing number of Americans barely get by,” Obama said in the address, calling for an overhaul of the tax code to bridge the widening gap between the rich and poor. “Or we can restore an economy where everyone gets a fair shot, everyone does their fair share, and everyone plays by the same set of rules. Tennis Legend’s Anti-Gay Remarks Spark Protest at Australian Open

Gay rights supporters will show their true colors at the Australian Open by wearing rainbow colored clothing and waving gay flags at the Australian Open in response to tennis legend Margaret Court’s anti-gay comments about same-sex marriage, the Melbourne Herald Sun reported in a Jan. 24 article.

One of those supporters is a 17-year-old British tennis player, Laura Robson, who wore a rainbow colored ribbon in her hair during a match she played last week. The teen told the media that she was aware of Court’s comments and said that she wore the rainbow ribbon "because I believe in equal rights for everyone." Full story here!

An out director’s depiction of racial divisions in the 1960s Deep South is among nine films nominated for this year’s Academy Award for Best Picture. The nominations were announced Tuesday morning.

The Help, directed by Tate Taylor and based on the 2009 novel by Kathryn Stockett, joins eight other films in the Best Picture race, including Martin Scorsese’s Hugo, which led the field with 11 nominations, as well as Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris and Steven Spielberg’s War Horse. LA Severed Head Victim Was Gay

"The CBS affiliate Channel 2 in Los Angeles confirmed reports that Hervey Medellin, the dismembered murder victim whose body parts were found in the Hollywood Hills last week, was gay.

The 66-year old Medellin was a former employee of Mexican airlines. His severed head was found in a park by a pair of dog walkers last Tuesday. Later, his hands and feet were found nearby, which ultimately led to his identification.

"Neighbors say Medellin lived with his boyfriend and his dog in a Hollywood apartment complex," he reported. "The LAPD spent hours collecting evidence here over the weekend. Investigators are now looking in Medellin’s latest relationship and his past marriage to a woman." Full story here!

Why This Washington Republican Broke With GOP on Marriage Equality

Two Republican senators have made waves in Washington State after announcing their support for a marriage equality bill proposed earlier this month by Gov. Christine Gregoire. And one told The Advocate he's not afraid of the retaliation promised by antigay groups.

The senator is much more modest. He said when the governor first brought up the idea of statewide marriage equality late last year, he knew it was the right thing to do.

“It’s really consistent with the fundamental tenets of individual freedom and personal responsibility,” he said in an interview with The Advocate. “It’s all about people getting to live the life they want to live without the government getting involved. 3 Convicted of Anti-Gay Hate Crime in Britain

Three men were convicted Friday of distributing anti-gay leaflets, and prosecutors called it a landmark case regarding the prosecution of hate crimes regarding sexual orientation.

A jury found the men to have distributed leaflets calling for homosexuals to face the death penalty. Two others were acquitted of the same charge.

"Everyone has a right to be protected by the law and we regard homophobic crimes, along with all hate crimes, as particularly serious because they undermine people’s right to feel safe," said Sue Hemming, chief of the Crown Prosecution Service special crime division. Full story here!

Maryland, Washington, New Jersey Begin To Debate Gay Marriage

Another Gay teen takes his life because of bullying

A Gordonsville boy's parents say bullying caused their son to take his own life. Phillip Parker, 14, died this week. His parents said he was constantly bullied for being gay.

More than 100 people gathered in Gordonsville on Saturday night, grieving the loss of Phillip.

"He was fun, he was energetic, he was happy," said Gena Parker, Phillip's mother.

To his many friends, Phillip was known as the boy who told everyone they're beautiful.

"He kept telling me he had a rock on his chest," said Ruby Harris, Phillip's grandmother. "He just wanted to take the rock off where he could breathe." Full story here!

Gay-Education Video for Schoolkids Ages 6-12 Has Rightwing in Frenzy

"The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) recently released a video titled, "What Do you Know? Six to Twelve Year Olds Talk About Gays and Lesbians." Right wing conservatives have attacked the educational film saying that its sending the "wrong message" to children and that children should not be educated about gays.

According to the HRC, the video "features students from Massachusetts and Alabama discussing what they know about gay men and lesbians, what they hear at school, and what they’d like teachers to do." The film’s description says that, it "is currently being used in Welcoming Schools trainings across the country and playing in film festivals in Mobile, Alabama; Spokane, Washington; and Barcelona, Spain." Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gringrich's ex-wife says the candidate sought an "open marriage" arrangement after admitting he was having an affair with a staffer.

Marianne Gingrich, who was the second of Gingrich’s three wives, makes the potentially explosive charge in an exclusive interview with ABC News investigative reporter Brian Ross.

Marianne was married to Gingrich for 18 years. Toward the end of their marriage, Gingrich revealed to her that he had conducted a six-year long affair with a staffer named Callista Bisek, according to the interview. He later married Bisek.

A 14-year-old California Girl Scout recently gained media attention for uploading a YouTube video where she slams the Girl Scouts of America for allowing transgender children into the organization. The teen also demands a boycott on Girl Scout cookies because of the "radical homosexual agenda," CBS Los Angeles reported in a Jan. 13 article.

The teen, only known as "Taylor," reacts to the Girl Scout’s decision that allowed a 7-year-old transgender boy to join the organization’s Colorado division. A leading New Hampshire House Republican has confirmed that a vote on a bill that would repeal the state’s marriage equality law has been delayed until at least next month.

House Majority Leader D.J. Bettencourt (R-Salem) did not return EDGE’s request for comment late on Tuesday, but he told the Eagle-Tribune that legislators will not vote on House Bill 437 until at least February.

Indiana Unveils its First License Plate for Gay Youth

Indiana’s first specialty license plate that benefits gay causes is now available for purchase.

Bureau of Motor Vehicles spokesman Graig Lubsen said the Indiana Youth Group plate has been available since Dec. 28. The plate bears a logo with hands in rainbow colors reaching up.
