Atlanta Police Arrest Suspect In Beating Of Brandon White

Atlanta police on Saturday announced they had arrested a suspect in the beating of Brandon White, a gay man.

Three men beat 20-year-old White on February 4 outside a southwest Atlanta store. The beating was captured on video and posted online. In the video, the men can be heard shouting anti-gay slurs at White as passersby look on.

Police spokesman Carlos Campos said that Christopher Cain, 18, had been charged with aggravated assault and robbery and that the police are still seeking the two other suspects. The men could also face hate crime charges, federal investigators said.

“I feel as though I should have justice,” White said during a press conference last week, “because those guys didn't feel my pain. They didn't care whether or not I was injured. I could have died that day. They're monsters.” Full story here!

And now, the backlash against the backlash. It’s only been a few Just days since the war of words between a group that (according to several reports, is at the least severely misnamed) calls itself One Million Moms, GLAAD and Ellen DeGeneres over the J.C. Penney chain’s decision to have the talkshow host be their spokesperson.

In that time, DeGeneres herself spoke up about the brouhaha. Meanwhile, GLAAD is fighting against the group, which is aligned with the virulently anti-gay American Family Association.

But the protest doesn’t appear to be "sticky" on the rights. In the ultra-conservative website Townhall, no less a personage than Fox News’ top talking head, Bill O’Reilly, served it up to the anti-Ellen protesters.

"While I sympathize with folks not wanting to deal with homosexuality, I think the Moms are wrong," O’Reilly opines. "DeGeneres is an American citizen. She has committed no crime. If she wants to promote equality for gays or gay marriage, that is her constitutional right. She should not be dismissed from anything." Full story here!

A British appeals court ruled that Christian bed and breakfast owners have to pay a gay couple nearly $5,700 in damages for turning them away based on sexual orientation.

In September 2008, owners of the Chymorvah Private Hotel in Cornwall, England, refused to allow gay couple, Steve Preddy and Martyn Hall, to share a double bed. Peter and Hazelmary Bull claim they turned away the men because they believe unmarried couples should not participate in sexual acts and not because they are homosexuals, EDGE reported. When a group called One Million Moms called for Ellen DeGeneres to be fired from her new job as spokesperson for JCPenney, the comedian used her show to respond, and she noted in passing how their name doesn't add up.

"Not that there's anyone counting, but for a group that calls themselves the million moms, they only have 40,000 members on their page," she mentioned as part of a response on her talk show. "They're rounding to the nearest million, and I get that."

Now a counter Facebook group has started that has already found more supporters than "One Million Moms." In 24 hours, the group called "1 Million people who support Ellen for JCPenney" had already surpassed "One Million Moms" in likes. Full story here!

Atlanta Gang Hate Crime Caught on Video, Victim Speaks Out

A video of an Atlanta gang attacking a 20-year-old gay man went viral this week. Members of the gang were filmed viciously beating the victim as he walked out of a grocery store while someone yelled, "No faggots in Jack City." "Jack City" refers to the gang’s name, "Pittsburgh Jack City Gang."

Three men punched and kicked Brandon White as he left the store, which caused him to fall to the ground. Another person then dropped a tire on him.

Other videos have surfaced including two that came from the store’s surveillance cameras, Atlanta local NBC outlet Channel 11 reported. The videos show that at least one of the alleged gang members was waiting outside the grocery store to jump White. Full story here!

A former human resources employee at the University of Toledo filed a lawsuit against the college because she was fired for writing an anti-gay article that criticized gay rights. A federal court judge, however, threw out her case, the Toledo Blade reported.

In late 2008, Crystal Dixon filed a complaint against the school alleging that it violated her First Amendment and 14th Amendment rights but U.S. District Judge David Katz dismissed and closed her case. Full story here!

Roland Martin Meets With GLAAD; Wife Makes Anti-Gay Tweet

CNN’s Roland Martin made national headlines this week for tweeting an anti-gay and violent comment. After issuing an apology to the LGBT community and to Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), the network suspended the commentator but he still plans to meet with the organization in the "near future."

"I look forward to meeting with GLAAD in the near future and having a productive dialogue," Martin tweeted. GLAAD replied and wrote, "@rolandsmartin We look forward to a productive dialogue and to working together as well."

Despite Martin’s efforts to repair the relationship between himself, the gay community and the organization, Martin’s wife took to Twitter and slammed GLAAD and CNN. Jacquie Hood Martin apparently wasn’t too happy when she found out that her husband had been suspended from CNN, America Blog Gay reported. Jacquie replied to someone named Sophia A. Nelson, who tweeted that GLAAD is a bully and that "Roland is being used as the whipping boy." Martin originally tweeted about an ad that appeared during the Super Bowl, which showed soccer player David Beckham modeling his new H&M underwear line. "If a dude at your Super Bowl party is hyped about David Beckham’s H&M underwear ad, smack the ish out of him!" he wrote.

But the apology wasn’t enough for executives at CNN, who have just announced that they have suspended Martin indefinitely. As reported by the Washington Post, CNN issued a statement that called the tweets "regrettable and offensive. Language that demeans is inconsistent with the values and culture of our organization, and is not tolerated," the statement continued. Washington state lawmakers voted to approve gay marriage Wednesday, setting the stage for the state to become the seventh in the nation to allow same-sex couples to wed.

The action comes a day after a federal appeals court declared California’s ban on gay marriage unconstitutional, saying it was a violation of the civil rights of gay and lesbian couples.

The Washington House passed the bill on a 55-43 vote. The state Senate approved the measure last week. And Democratic Gov. Chris Gregoire is expected to sign the measure into law next week.

However, gay couples can’t begin walking down the aisle just yet.

The proposal would take effect 90 days after the governor signs, but opponents have promised to fight gay marriage with a ballot measure that would allow voters to overturn the legislative approval. Full story here!

The ad worked up a number of women -- and not-so-few men -- across the country. One of them was CNN’s Roland Martin, who tweeted about the commercial.

Two gay men who say they were punched and pinned to the ground by an off-duty police officer before being called offensive names and jailed without their trousers have sued the city and its police over what they call anti-gay bias.

Steven Ondo and Jonathan Simcox said the off-duty officer, who was a neighbor, complained about a noisy argument on the street and attacked them last April and had them arrested. A week later, they said, they were arrested by SWAT officers and were punched again at their home while lounging in T-shirts and underpants. A Feb. 7 ruling by the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower court ruling that found Prop. 8, California's ban on same-sex marriage, violates the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution, which guarantees Americans equal protection under the law. The ban was struck down in a vote of 2-1 by the three-judge panel.

In addition, the appeals court flatly rejected the argument made by Prop. 8 supporters that openly gay Judge Vaughn Walker, who issued the initial decision finding the ban unconstitutional, should have recused himself from the case because he is in a long-term relationship. Full story here!

Super Bowl TV audience reaches record 111.3 million

A record 111.3 million viewers watched the New York Giants defeat the New England Patriots 21-17 in the Super Bowl on Sunday, just beating the 2011 TV audience for the game, according to ratings data on Monday.

The Nielsen company said Sunday's Super Bowl TV audience on the NBC network was the most-watched television program in U.S history. Full story here!

Madonna Covers ‘The Advocate’, Says She Never Left Gay Fans Behind

Madonna graces the cover of gay publication The Advocate via what appears to be a paparazzi shot that’s been Photoshopped to look like an old-school Peter Max rock gig poster. In the mag, the “Give Me All Your Luvin’” singer discusses her film W.E., as well as her longstanding status as a gay icon. “I saw how people treated them differently,” she says of her gay friends and fans. “I saw the prejudices, and I think probably I got that confused with, intertwined with, you know, maybe things that…ways that people treated me differently.”

Madonna also recounts her own experience of living in New York City during the AIDS crisis in the 1980s to The Advocate: “I was extremely affected by it. I remember lying on a bed with a friend of mine who was a musician, and he had been diagnosed with this kind of cancer, but nobody knew what it was. He was this beautiful man, and I watched him kind of waste away, and then another gay friend, and then another gay friend, and then another gay friend.
