Scientists: Having Older Brothers Raises Odds of Being Gay

Canadian scientists have found that the more older male siblings a man has, the greater the chance he will be gay. In a series of studies reported in the UK Daily Mail Online, researchers discovered that each older brother raises a man’s odds of being a homosexual by a third.

"It’s likely to be a prenatal effect" said Anthony F. Bogeart back when his original findings were released in 2006. "This and other studies suggest that there is probably a biological basis for homosexuality."

The phenomenon is nature, not nurture, say docs from Brock University in Ontario. Rather than being attributed to any differences in the way a youngest son is raised, it has a biological basis.
Scientists say that a woman mounts an immune response in her womb while pregnant with a son. This increases with each male baby, "raising the odds of ’feminising’ the foetus’ developing brain.’"

A study of 1,000 men, including some who were adopted or brought up with stepsiblings, revealed that having many brothers raised a man’s odds of being gay. This correlation only occurred among blood brothers, however. Stepbrothers did not have an effect, but biological brothers who were brought up separately did. No similar link has been found between having many older sisters and becoming a lesbian. Full details of the study via Edge here!

So weird...nearly everyone I know who is gay is an oldest or only child.

Me too actually. I am the oldest and well....

I have 3 sisters and am a middle child. Being the only boy though is like being an only child in some respects.
And what is up with Dave Franco? Wishful thinking?

I also debunk this theory. Because of the 3 boys and 1 girl that make up my Mother's children, I am the OLDEST male with my sister being the oldest overall. And trust me, Mom fought hard for me to not be gay. Evidently, since I define myself as a predominately gay bisexual, Nature told my Mom, "Lady, even if it takes decades, I'm winning this".

Lol. Yes. Very wishful thinking on my part regarding Dave Franco. ;)

I am the oldest boy in the family, and gay as a lark, whereas my kid brother is straight as an arrow. The two other siblings are female, one being a lesbian. I think this "feminizing of the fetus brain" theory is misguided, as most of my fellow gay buddies are more naturally masculine in appearance and demeanor than most straight men. The mainstream stereotype of the effeminate gay man is just that, a stereotype. It exists only because effeminate men are more readily noticeable.

I do, however, believe in the mother's body developing an immune response to male fetuses, as both my brother and I were born premature, literally rejected from the womb at about 7 months of pregnancy, whereas my two sisters each came out 2 weeks overdue.

Interesting what the above comments say. I'm the younger of two, and my brother is straight as a die, whilst I'm bi. I seem to fit into the research perfectly/ Hmmm.
