Aristide “A.J.” Laurent, a founder of The Advocate, dies at age 70

"Aristide J. Laurent, a pioneer in the gay rights movement and a founder of The Advocate newspaper, died at his home in Los Angeles on Oct. 26, 2011, after a long illness, friends announced. He was 70.

Laurent helped start The Los Angeles Advocate in 1967, working alongside Richard Mitch (Dick Michaels), Bill Rau and Sam Allen, who had taken over the Pride newsletter and renamed it. Laurent, then working at ABC Television with Rau and Allen, helped produce early issues of The Advocate in the studio’s basement print shop and wrote a nightlife column (“Mariposas de la Noche”) under the pseudonym “P. Nutz.”

Everyone on the paper used pseudonyms, he noted. “It was dangerous to be a ‘pervert’ prior to the liberation movement. You didn’t use your real name for fear of reprisals, not only harassment by the LAPD, but the ever-present possibility of losing your day job, family and friends,” he wrote in a 2007 blog marking the publication’s 40th anniversary." 'Glee' Exclusive Photo: Grant Gustin, Warbler Villain

"There's more drama coming to "Glee" this season when the series returns from hiatus in the coming weeks. Kurt and Blaine, the much buzzed-about couple who have been squarely in the honeymoon phase since they locked lips last season, are getting a roadblock in the form of Sebastian, a new Dalton Warbler set to shake things up in the Klaine union by gunning for Blaine's affection on the Nov. 8 episode." Question of the Day

Let's all be honest and not brag as I would like to gauge a true answer for these questions...

1.  How many times per week do you have sex?

2.  How many times per week to do take matters into your own hands?  (Jerk off.)

"The Right to Love: An American Family" - Documentary Trailer

Adam Levine VS Fox News in Twitter War

So the other day Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine went on Twitter to demand that Fox News stop playing his band’s music. “Dear Fox News, don’t play our music on your evil fucking channel ever again. Thank you,” he wrote.
Apparently the homophobic bigots at Faux News didn’t like that too well and took to twitter themselves to reply. Fox News hosts Greg Gutfeld and Andy Levy both replied to the singer on Twitter, each mocking the “Dear Fox News” phrasing of Levine’s tweet. “Dear Adam, that’s not music,” wrote Gutfeld. Levine elaborated slightly in his tweet, writing “Dear @AdamLevine, don’t make crappy fucking music ever again. Thank you.”

While it isn’t clear what started the little twitter war, I’m guessing it has something to do with the fact Fox is a bunch of haters..just my guess.

For those of you wondering it’s very common for musicians to ask politicians to stop using their songs in campaigns – Tom Petty, Katrina and the Waves and David Byrne all dealt with this earlier this year – it’s unusual to see an artist make this demand of a network, even one as highly politicized as Fox News. While musicians very seldom get paid performance royalties when their music is used on campaign stops, television networks are obligated to pay out royalties every time a song is used in a broadcast. {source} Thanks to Sozo for sharing this with me!

Gay couples' kids more likely to be poor

Children growing up in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender families in the US are more likely to live in poverty and may be denied legal ties to one of their parents, a report showed.

A lack of federal recognition of same-sex marriages means such families face higher tax burdens and unequal access to health insurance and government safety net programmes, said the report entitled All Children Matter: How Legal and Social Inequalities Hurt LGBT Families. Full story here!

The 20 Best Books About Gender Studies

"Gender and human sexuality exist in shades of grey, not the bipolar "male-female" and "heterosexual-homosexual" mindsets with which most people are familiar. Were it all so clear, easy and black-and-white, colleges wouldn’t have much of a reason to offer gender studies courses and majors! And with so many personalities and philosophies at play, it behooves such students to consider and read about everything they possibly can, although trying to tackle them all might prove impossible. The following 20 offer up some fantastic starting points unraveling the tangled field, but should not be thought of as the be-all-end-all gender studies canon". Full story here!

Wicked Shit Bag :: Perry Backs NH Marriage Repeal

"As conservatives we believe in the sanctity of life. We believe in the sanctity of traditional marriage. And I applaud those legislators in New Hampshire who are working to defend marriage as an institution between one man and one woman, realizing that children need to be raised in a loving home by a mother and a father." - Rick Perry, speaking at a banquet staged by the New Hampshire hate group, Cornerstone Action.   Via JMG

Hard Times for Gay Retirement Havens

"Like so many others who have settled here, Janice Gaynor and her partner, Barbara Cohn, wanted to retire somewhere where they could be themselves, whether that meant holding hands in public or making decisions about each other’s end-of-life health care.

So when RainbowVision swung open its doors in 2006 as one of the first retirement communities in the country to proudly serve gay men and lesbians, offering elegant adobes where people could live out their lives among friends, the couple could not move in fast enough.

“This was our safety valve,” Ms. Gaynor said.

These days, that promise is all but forgotten. RainbowVision has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, racked by financial problems and an increasingly bitter dispute between residents and management. Its problems mirror those of many other gay retirement communities around the country that have either failed to open or fallen on hard times, victims of a weakened housing market, a deflated economy and, in some cases, poor business decisions.

They were once hailed as havens where the so-called Stonewall generation — the first “out” group of senior citizens — could age without being treated with hostility or forced back into the closet."  Full story here!
