Cher-Gaga Duet Is "Timeless" and "Uplifting"
"The Greatest Thing," the much anticipated duet between Cher and Lady Gaga, might actually live up to its title, according to an MTV interview with co-writer and producer RedOne.
Last month Cher tweeted that she expects the first single from her forthcoming new album to be released in September, saying it "should be epic!"
RedOne tells MTV that both women are ecstatic about the final product. "I think it's timeless," he says. "The beautiful thing about this song is, it's very uplifting, very uplifting. It's emotional, but it has dance on it, and it has a dance vibe on it. It's just a timeless song. You can play it with the guitar, the piano, with whatever instrument you want. You can sing it a cappella, you know what I mean, it's that kind of song. Full story here!

Wal-Mart Extends Anti-Discrimination Policy to Trans Employees
Retail giant Wal-Mart has extended its non-discrimination policy to trans employees, drawing praise from GLBT equality advocates. Wal-Mart’s policies already covered gay and lesbian employees, though there have been claims of anti-gay harassment at specific store locations.
"What matters in the workplace is how you do your job, not your gender identity or sexual orientation," the president of the Human Rights Campaign, Joe Solmonese, said in a Sept. 28 news release.
"As the nation’s largest private employer, Wal-Mart shows that doing the right thing is also good for business," Solmonese added. "We urge them to continue to move forward by ensuring all of their LGBT employees receive equal benefits." Full story here!

New Gay Warbler to Come Between Kurt and Blaine!
It looks like the honeymoon is over for Kurt and Blaine.
Sources confirm to TVLine exclusively that Glee has tapped up-and-coming theater actor Grant Gustin to play the recurring role of Sebastian, a gay Dalton Academy Warbler who sets his sights on Blaine.
Both Fox and the show’s producers declined to comment, but the buzz is that Sebastian is the polar opposite of Kurt in every possible way. He’s more like the male version of Santana in that he’s both promiscuous and kinda-sorta scheming. Full story here!

Census Reflects Nearly 132,000 Married Same-Sex Families
Increasingly visible, the number of gay Americans telling the U.S. census they’re living with same-sex partners nearly doubled in the past decade, to about 650,000 couples. And more than 130,000 recorded partners as husband or wife.
Census figures released Tuesday provide a rare snapshot of married and unmarried same-sex couples in the U.S. based on the government count conducted last year, when gay marriage was legal in five states and the District of Columbia. It comes at a time when public opposition to gay marriage is easing and advocacy groups are seeking a state-by-state push for broader legal rights. Full story here!

Obama Expects DOMA Ruling ’Soon’
Barack Obama said during a Sept. 28 meeting that he expects a court ruling "soon" on the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), an anti-gay law from 1996 that singles out gay and lesbian families for discriminatory treatment by denying them federal recognition of any sort, ThinkProgress reported that same day.
Two federal court cases have already found DOMA to be unconstitutional. The Obama Administration announced earlier this year that it would no longer defend the law in court, where at least ten cases challenge the law, because of Constitutional questions. Full story here!

Study: People More Comfortable With Out Co-Workers Than Closeted Ones
New research supports the notion that people who don’t hide their sexual orientation are not only more pleasant to be around, but also perform more effectively in the workplace by improving teamwork.
During the six-month study, the first of its kind, a research team tested a group of 50 undergraduate men. Each was paired with a gay man who either disclosed or concealed his orientation.
Separate studies measured cognitive and sensory-motor skills in performing math problems and in playing a Nintendo Wii shooting game.
Results: 1/3 Better With Openly Gay Co-Worker
The results showed that the participants paired with openly gay partners performed on average 32 percent better on solving math problems and 20 percent better on the Nintendo game compared to participants paired with closeted gay partners.
Previous research showed that ambiguity in interactions may hurt performance, since people need to be able to predict behaviors and attitudes with team partners to facilitate social interaction, according to UCLA.

Once-Smooth Waters Getting Choppy for Anti-Gay GOP Frontrunner
Rick Perry is struggling.
Republicans in early voting states, once excited about the Texas governor’s presidential bid, are openly questioning the strength of his candidacy. High expectations have been met by the sudden national scrutiny that comes with the front-runner bull’s-eye.
Perry is leading national polls, but he is also facing intensifying criticism from the right and left. Some Republicans in Iowa and New Hampshire are expressing doubts, especially after debates in which rivals raised questions about his record on immigration, public health and Social Security.
One national immigration group says Perry is finished. Conservatives are slamming his support of education benefits for illegal immigrants. Full story here!

Thousands Run in Underwear to Protest Utah Laws
Thousands of people stripped to their underwear and ran through Salt Lake City to protest what they called the "uptight" laws of Utah.
Undie Run organizer Nate Porter says the goal of the event Saturday was to organize people frustrated by the conservative nature of state politics.
Nudity was prohibited by organizers. Participants donned bras, panties, nightgowns, swimwear or colorful boxer shorts - and some added political messages by expressing support for causes like gay marriage on their chests, backs or legs.
Salt Lake City is the home of the Mormon church, which is a vocal opponent of gay marriage.
Porter estimates 3,000 people participated in the run, which began in downtown Salt Lake City and circled past the state Capitol building about a mile away. (Source-Edge New England)

GOP Debate Viewers Jeer Gay Soldier
During one of the few Republican debates to address gay rights, a soldier posted a YouTube question for former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum about "don't ask, don't tell," which resulted in the soldier being booed by the Orlando, Fla., crowd.
Stephen Hill, who was deployed to Iraq in 2010, said he was initially forced "to lie about who he was" out of fear that he could be discharged due to the military's now-eradicated ban on openly gay service members.
He asked the panel of nine GOP presidential hopefuls, "Under one of your presidencies, do you intent do circumvent the progress that's been made for gay and lesbian soldiers in the military?"
Immediately after the question was asked, the crowd reacted with booing toward the soldier. Full story here!
