New HIV Case Causes LA Porn Industry Shutdown
An adult film performer has tested positive for HIV, causing porn producers to shut down shoots in Southern California as the diagnosis is confirmed through re-testing, according to an industry group.
Free Speech Coalition executive director Diane Duke told The Los Angeles Times on Monday that her group became aware of the HIV case Saturday.
A series of tests were being conducted on the performer to confirm the case before anyone the performer might have spread the illness to will be notified to get tested, Duke told The Associated Press.
She didn’t know how long that would take.
Duke declined to release the performer’s name, age or gender, citing the person’s federal right to medical privacy. She also declined to say how her group learned of the case. Full story here!

Gay Former Army Officer Dan C\hoi on Trial in DC for Protest
A gay former Army lieutenant arrested for handcuffing himself to a White House fence during a protest is being treated differently because he is a prominent voice for gay rights, his lawyer said Monday.
Dan Choi, a West Point graduate and Iraq War veteran, is charged with disobeying police orders to leave an area in front of the White House during a November 2010 protest of the military’s "don’t ask, don’t tell policy." During the protest, 13 people handcuffed themselves to the fence, some in uniform, chanting slogans including "let us serve."
Choi’s attorney Robert Feldman said Monday at the start of his trial in federal court in Washington that people arrested for protesting at the White House are usually charged in local court where the penalty for disobeying a police order is a fine of between $100 and $1,000. But Choi was charged in federal court, where he faces both a fine and jail time of up to six months. Full story here!

Anti-Gay Puerto Rico Senator Steps Down Amidst Photo Controversy
A Puerto Rico lawmaker has resigned following reports that explicit photos of him surfaced on an iPhone application for gays and bisexuals, the head of the U.S. territory’s Senate announced Sunday.
Sen. Roberto Arango, a Republican who represents the capital of San Juan for the island’s governing party, presented his letter of resignation after a weekend meeting, Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz said.
Schatz did not release the lawmaker’s letter, but said the circumstances that led to the resignation "are very lamentable."
Local news media published photos from the application showing a man’s nude upper body with a cell phone obscuring his face. Another photo showed a rear view of a nude man on his hands and knees. Another showed a fuzzy image of a face that seemed to match Arango’s. Full story here!

Irene Causes Minimal Damage to Gay Beach Resorts
Hurricane Irene caused minimal damage to gay resorts from Delaware to Massachusetts as it lashed the Mid-Atlantic and New England over the weekend.
There were several washovers on Fire Island during high tide on early Sunday, Aug. 28, as the center of Irene passed just to the west of the beach-these include two at Sail and Nautilus Walks in Fire Island Pines. A storm surge of up to five feet on the bay inundated large swaths of Fire Island during two high tide cycles on Sunday, while the streets leading to the Sayville ferry terminal were under several feet of water at high tide. The Fire Island Pines Property Owners Association noted that the dunes along the ocean were "in good shape" after Irene. Full story here!
