Transgender Housekeeper Fired After Background Check
A housekeeper filed a lawsuit Thursday claiming that a couple who once employed her abruptly fired her when they discovered that she is transgender, Reuters reports.
When Anastacia St. Claire-Hannah officially started working at the Park Avenue apartment on March 9 after a two-week trial period, Carline Dean indicated that she was "very impressed" with the housekeeper's work. However, after the couple found out her transgender status through a background check, Thompson Dean started calling the housekeeper "disgusting" and "a freak." Full story here!

Calif. Marriage Equality Case to be Heard in September
California’s highest court says it will hear arguments right after Labor Day on an issue that is likely to prove decisive for the fate of the state’s voter-enacted ban on same-sex marriages.
The California Supreme Court scheduled a Sept. 6 hearing to consider whether ballot initiative sponsors have authority to fight court rulings on their measures if the governor and attorney general refuse to appeal.
The question is pivotal to the future of the 2008 ban, known as Proposition 8, because former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Gov. Jerry Brown, in his previous role as attorney general, refused last year to challenge a federal court ruling that struck down the law as a violation of gay Californians’ civil rights. Judge Tosses Suit to Halt Prayer Day Featuring Anti-Gay Pastors
A federal judge dismissed a lawsuit that sought to stop Gov. Rick Perry from sponsoring a national day of Christian prayer and fasting, ruling Thursday that the group of atheists and agnostics did not have legal standing to sue.
U.S. District Judge Gray H. Miller said the Freedom From Religion Foundation argued against Perry’s involvement based merely on feelings of exclusion, but did not show sufficient harm to merit the injunction they sought. Full story here!

Miley Cyrus Gets Gay Marriage Tattoo On Finger
Via Towleroad: "Miley Cyrus has grown into quite the fierce gay advocate.
In addition to calling out Urban Outfitters' president for donating to Rick Santorum and regularly tweets messages of same-sex support, such as, "I am Christian and I love you -- gay or not."
Now the singer has taken her pro-gay love one step further by getting a marriage equality tattoo.
"All LOVE is equal," Cyrus wrote in a tweet with a picture of her new ink, an equal sign -- on her middle finger, prime anatomical real estate.
While many among the LGBT community may love Miley's new ink, not all of her fans are as supportive; Cyrus refuses to kowtow to them, though, and replied to a homophobic message with inclusion: "Where does it say in the bible to judge others? Oh right. It doesn't. GOD is the only judge honey. 'GOD is love.'"
Even if you don't agree with her Christian slant or don't like her music, it's impossible not to be touched by young Cyrus' commitment to LGBT progress."

With An Eye to September, Gay Military Advocacy Group Releases Post-DADT Guide
Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) has released a comprehensive guide to military service in the post-"Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell" world that is slated to dawn on Sept. 20, sixty days after the president, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the defense secretary certified that America’s fighting forces were ready for full integration.
The newly released "Freedom to Serve: The Definitive Guide to LGBT Military Service" is available as a PDF download at the SLDN website.
Although no major problems have emerged as the process of preparing the military for service by openly gay servicemembers has continued, advocates for gay and lesbian patriots in uniform who will be free to serve openly and honestly starting on Sept. 20 do not anticipate an absolutely fair and discrimination-free atmosphere from the get-go. For that reason, a July 28 news release from SLDN noted, the group is ready to continue defending servicemembers and also press for full equality in both the treatment and the benefits they receive. Pelosi: Suicide Spike Shows Bachmann to be A Poor Presidential Pick
Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi says that Michele Bachmann’s failure to address a surge in teen suicides in her congressional district demonstrates why Bachmann would be a poor choice for the Oval Office, the Advocate reported on July 29.
Nine students in the Anoka-Hennepin School District, which lies in Bachmann’s congressional district in Minnesota, have killed themselves in the last two years and a number of others have attempted suicide, noted a July 25 Mother Jones Magazine article. Teen suicide is so prevalent in the Anoka-Hennepin School District that health authorities in the state have labeled it a "suicide contagion area," Mother Jones reported. Full story here!

Police Investigate Claims of Michigan Hate Crime
A Grand Rapids, Mich., man says he was the victim of a sudden and violent hate crime Wednesday evening.
David Battjes, 51, told police he was wearing a West Michigan Pride shirt as he walked to his vehicle after attending an Equality Michigan meeting. It was then, he says, that two men in their 20s who were walking past suddenly attacked him.

Wells Fargo Had a Busy Pride Season
Wells Fargo & Company has long been a leader among U.S. financial services providers in its commitment to the LGBT community, and this year marks one of their busiest LGBT pride seasons ever. From Seattle to South Florida, the bank is participating in 40 LGBT Pride parades and festivals, with more than 20 just last month. It’s a history that began almost twenty years ago, in 1992, when Wells Fargo sponsored its first LGBT Pride event in San Francisco.

Wells Fargo venues this year include LGBT Pride events in Boise, Idaho and Birmingham, Ala., as well as Black Pride in Philadelphia. Gay Blood Ban Revisited -- Changes May Result
Certification for the repeal of "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell" has been issued, and the Obama Administration has said that it favors the repeal of another anti-gay federal law, the Defense of Marriage Act. But there’s another longstanding ban on gays that might also be headed for history: The FDA’s refusal to allow men who have had sex with other men even once since the 1970s to donate blood, for fear that their blood might carry the virus that causes AIDS.
The ban on gay, bisexual, and MSM blood donors went into effect in 1985, when testing methods were much less sensitive than they are today. Two members of Congress, Sen. John Kerry (Democrat of Massachusetts) and Rep. Mike Quigley (Democrat of Illinois), have kept up the pressure on the FDA in recent years, noting that the agency’s guidelines are blatantly discriminatory toward gays: Heterosexual men may donate even after paying prostitutes for sex, after a one-year waiting period, whereas gay men are banned for life under the current policy. Circumcision Ban to be Stricken from SF Ballot
A judge said Wednesday she intends to strike a ban on male circumcision from the city’s November ballot.
Superior Court Judge Loretta Giorgi said in a tentative ruling that the proposed law prohibiting circumcision of male children violates a California law that makes regulating medical procedures a function of the state, not cities.
"It serves no legitimate purpose to allow a measure whose invalidity can be determined as a matter of law to remain on the ballot," Giorgi wrote.
Giorgi ordered San Francisco’s elections director to remove the controversial measure from the ballot that would have made the city the first in the nation to hold a public vote on whether to outlaw the circumcision of minors. Full story here!
