Greater of Two Evils? KKK Versus Westboro at Memorial Day Protest

A group of demonstrators affiliated with the Ku Klux Klan staged a counterprotest Monday against members of the antigay Westboro Baptist Church at Arlington National Cemetery.

Several people protested against Westboro, known for its antigay messages scrawled on large signs at the funerals of fallen troops and people with AIDS. Among them were 10 members of a group claiming to be a branch of the Ku Klux Klan, known as the Knights of the Southern Cross in Virginia.

Dennis LaBonte, the "imperial wizard" of the KKK offshoot, told CNN, "It's the soldier that fought and died and gave them that right to free speech."

Abigail Phelps countered that members of the KKK "have no moral authority on anything." She added, "People like them say it's white power ... white supremacy. The Bible doesn't say anywhere that it's an abomination to be born of a certain gender or race." (Source-Advocate)

Transgender Teen Elected Prom Queen

A Florida transgender high school student was elected prom queen Friday night.

“They called my name and I was in total shock,’’ said Andii Viveros, a 17-year-old who was born male but has lived as a female for the past two years. Despite being bullied and taunted, the McFatter Technical High School senior has a strong support system — including a new principal who encouraged her to run for prom queen. Full story here!

Obama issues Gay Pride Month Declaration

"The story of America's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community is the story of our fathers and sons, our mothers and daughters, and our friends and neighbors who continue the task of making our country a more perfect Union," reads the statement. "It is a story about the struggle to realize the great American promise that all people can live with dignity and fairness under the law. Each June, we commemorate the courageous individuals who have fought to achieve this promise for LGBT Americans, and we rededicate ourselves to the pursuit of equal rights for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

"Since taking office, my Administration has made significant progress towards achieving equality for LGBT Americans. Last December, I was proud to sign the repeal of the discriminatory 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' policy. With this repeal, gay and lesbian Americans will be able to serve openly in our Armed Forces for the first time in our Nation's history. Our national security will be strengthened and the heroic contributions these Americans make to our military, and have made throughout our history, will be fully recognized.

"My Administration has also taken steps to eliminate discrimination against LGBT Americans in Federal housing programs and to give LGBT Americans the right to visit their loved ones in the hospital. We have made clear through executive branch nondiscrimination policies that discrimination on the basis of gender identity in the Federal workplace will not be tolerated. I have continued to nominate and appoint highly qualified, openly LGBT individuals to executive branch and judicial positions. Because we recognize that LGBT rights are human rights, my Administration stands with advocates of equality around the world in leading the fight against pernicious laws targeting LGBT persons and malicious attempts to exclude LGBT organizations from full participation in the international system. We led a global campaign to ensure 'sexual orientation' was included in the United Nations resolution on extrajudicial execution — the only United Nations resolution that specifically mentions LGBT people — to send the unequivocal message that no matter where it occurs, state-sanctioned killing of gays and lesbians is indefensible. No one should be harmed because of who they are or who they love, and my Administration has mobilized unprecedented public commitments from countries around the world to join in the fight against hate and homophobia."

Gay Marriage, Pro & Con, Remains on Political Front-Burner

A flurry of recent activity on the state level shows that legalizing or banning gay relationships remains very much on the front-burner of American politics. New York, Minnesota & Rhode Island are current battlegrounds - as is the GOP itself.  Full story here!

The Tradition Continues..... 2011 Naval Academy Herndon Monument Climb

Herndon Monument Climb - At the sound of a cannon blast, 1,000 eager, screaming plebes charge toward a 21-foot grey monument that taunted them all year. They attempt to climb the lard-covered obelisk as thousands of spectators watch with the hopes that they complete the task quickly. This event at the U.S. Naval Academy is known simply as "Herndon" or the "Plebe Recognition Ceremony."

The lard was back Monday for first-year students at the U.S. Naval Academy who celebrate the end of their "plebe" year by creating a human pyramid to get a classmate to the top of a 21-foot obelisk. One student was taken to the hospital for treatment after participating.

Matt D., of Safety Harbor, Fla., replaced the first-year student's "dixie cup" hat with a midshipman's cover on top of the Herndon Monument in 2 hours, 41 minutes and 32 seconds. That compares with a climb that took only about 2 minutes last year, when the monument was not greased due to the safety concerns of a former superintendent.  (Photos of 2011 event plus some of my fave's from past climbs mixed in.)

Survey: Gays Gaining Global Acceptance

An international study shows that most countries have become more accepting of LGBT people over the last two decades, but the reverse trend is evident in former socialist countries.

The study finds that "overwhelmingly, societies have become more accepting of homosexual behavior." In the study of 31 countries, most showed an increase in favorable public opinion, with the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, and Belgium-Flanders the most accepting. Four countries -- Russia, the Czech Republic, Cyprus, and Latvia -- were the only nations to show a decrease in acceptance. Full story here!
