NEW ORLEANS: Anti-Gay Pastor Grant Storms Busted As Pedophile Pervert

"New Orleans' infamous Pastor Grant Storms, who every year can be found shouting hellfire and brimstone at Southern Decadence attendees, has been arrested for masturbating in his van while watching children in a playground.

Storms has actually held anti-gay "purity" parades through the French Quarter during Southern Decadence. But not, we're guessing, this year!"  Full story here via JMG!

"Vancouver topped the list of the world’s most livable cities for the fifth straight year, while Melbourne claimed second place from Vienna and Australian and Canadian cities dominated the list’s top 10 spots.

In the annual survey by the Economist Intelligence Unit, the Canadian west coast city and 2010 Winter Olympics host scored 98% on a combination of stability, health care, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure — a score unchanged from last year."

What Happened Was This

A riveting new documentary, We Were Here, examines the early years of the AIDS epidemic in San Francisco.

Perhaps it’s easy to think that the story of AIDS in the gay community has been told, but a deeper examination of the mid-1980’s health crisis has really only begun. A new documentary, We Were Here, tackles the epic tale of the early years of AIDS in San Francisco, through intimate interviews with five people — four gay men and one straight woman — whose experiences with care giving, research, art, activism and personal loss poignantly illuminate an extraordinary time.  Full story here!

In Recession’s Wake, Frugal Ways Make a Comeback

Throw away the cellphone after two years? Not so fast. Ditch the flat-panel TV for an even thinner model? Maybe next year. Replace the blouse with the hole? Darn it!

Consumer spending has picked up, but for some Americans the recession has left something behind: a greater interest in making stuff last.

For a number of products — cars, phones, computers, even shampoo and toothpaste — the data shows a slowing of product life cycles and consumption. In many cases the difference is mere months, but economists and consumers say the approach just may outlast a full recovery and the return of easy credit, because of the strong impression the downturn made on consumers.

It is hardly the stuff of generations past, those stung by the Great Depression, who held onto antediluvian dishware and stored canned goods until rust formed on the lids. But for the moment, many citizens of a throwaway society are making fewer visits to the trash and recycling bins. Full story here!

WGB:  I completely agree.  I am so much less wasteful than I use to be because of the economy (and my subsequent reduction in disposable income.) This recession has caused me to conserve, makes things last longer, try non brand names, shop online for the best possible price...to name just a few.

I think one major thing that came out of this recession as well is that it is once again cool to get a bargain and it isn't cool to pay full price for anything.

Gayle King Gets Passionate on Gay Rights

Gayle King invites her close friend Brad Lamm on her show to talk about the news the Obama administration will stop defending DOMA in court and what it’s going to take for people to come around on the issue of gay rights.

“I think it’s closed minded and I just have no tolerance for it,” King says of people who are homophobic. “… It boggles my mind that in the year 2011 this is still an issue.”  Full story here!

Gay Couple Bashed at Burger King Awarded $3.15 Million

A gay New Jersey couple who were chased and beaten by Burger King employees following a 2007 altercation have been awarded $3.15 million by a Hudson County jury.

In a civil trial that began Feb. 7, victims Peter Casbar, 43, and Noel Robichaux, 46, testified that a dispute with the person taking their order escalated to involve other workers and then became violent, even after the couple had left the Union City restaurant.

"The manager and a group of angry restaurant employees chased the couple and then mercilessly kicked, beat, and spat upon the two men while screaming hate-filled anti-gay invectives."  Full story here!

Porn Studio Responds to Criticism of Lawsuit

After last week’s article "Gay Porn Studio ’Takes Pounding’ From Pirates" many readers were worried that an upcoming lawsuit by Corbin Fisher could potentially ’out’ gay teens and drive them to suicide.

SFGN asked Marc Randazza, general counsel for Corbin Fisher, for a response.

"What we’re trying to do is deal with a copyright problem," he said. "We are acutely sensitive to any issues like that. We have taken great pains and at great expense at times [to avoid outing anyone]."

In fact he said his studio offers straight porn as well so any offenders wishing to keep their sexual identity a secret would not be ’outed.’

"I have encountered people who are college students all the way up through elderly people who have expressed a concern about being outed," he said. "I have done everything and anything I can to respect that. Corbin Fisher makes straight content as well. You can come out in your own time and place of your choosing. This is about theft, not about anyone’s orientation." Full story here!

Sir Elton John chooses Lady Gaga to be godmother to his baby son Zachary

She has been a strong campaigner for gay rights and is an active supporter of raising HIV and AIDS awareness.

Something that Sir Elton John and his partner David Furnish took on board when deciding to choose Lady Gaga as the godmother to their baby son Zachary.

According to reports today, the eccentric singer is set to become one of the little boy's godparents.

During an interview this week, Furnish was asked if Gaga - real name Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta - was going to be godmother to Zachary.

In a story on cbsnews.com, Furnish was being interviewed by Canadian magazine Macleans, and the reporter asked him: 'Correct me if I'm wrong but Lady Gaga has been named Zachary's godmother. What led you to choose her?'

Furnish replied: 'We haven't publicly confirmed that yet but your sources are very good!

'I prefer not to comment on it because we are going to make a statement about godparents later on.'  Full story here!

REPORT: You Have More Money In Your Wallet Than Bank Of America Pays In Federal Taxes

In an interview with In These Times, Carl Gibson, the founder of US Uncut, which is organizing some of today’s UK-inspired massive demonstrations against tax dodgers, explains that while ordinary Americans are being asked to sacrifice, major corporations continue to use the rigged tax code to avoid paying any federal taxes at all. As he says, if you have “one dollar” in your wallet, you’re paying more than the “combined income tax liability of GE, ExxonMobil, Citibank, and the Bank of America“:
[Gibson] explains, “I have one dollar in my wallet. That’s more than the combined income tax liability of GE, ExxonMobil, Citibank, and the Bank of America. That means somebody is gaming the system.”
Indeed, as politicians are asking ordinary Americans to sacrifice their education, their health, their labor rights, and their wellbeing to tackle budget deficits, some of the world’s richest multinational corporations are getting away with shirking their responsibility and paying nothing. ThinkProgress has assembled a short but far from comprehensive list of these tax dodgers — corporations which have rigged the tax system to their advantage so they can reap huge profits and avoid paying taxes... Jamie Oliver: Sarah Palin A 'Froot Loop' For Criticizing Michelle Obama

British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver called Sarah Palin a "Froot Loop" for criticizing the Obama administration's healthy eating initiatives, and said getting healthy foods to kids is a civil rights issue.

The U.S. is in a "really dark moment" when it comes to children's health and needs to make it a priority, said Oliver, who tried to transform the diets of a West Virginia town with his 2010 ABC show "Jamie's Food Revolution" and is filming a new version in Los Angeles.

Improving what children eat at school alone can have a far-reaching, positive effect on their habits and health as adults, Oliver said Saturday during an Associated Press interview at the South Beach Wine and Food Festival.

He said he doesn't have much faith that government will lead the way, but said the Obama administration is on the right track.

Palin, in contrast, "clearly on this issue is a Froot Loop," he said. Full Story here!

Openly Gay Man to Serve as White House Social Secretary

An openly gay man, Jeremy Bernard, will be the White House’s new social secretary, reported the Washington Post on Feb. 25.

Bernard, 49, currently holds the position of chief of staff to the United State’s ambassador to France. He is slated to become the first man--and the first openly gay individual--to take on the post of social secretary at the White House, the article noted. He will replace Julianna Smoot, who served the Obama campaign as chief fundraiser; Smoot is set to relocate to Chicago and head Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign.

Smoot, in turn, replaced the first social secretary to serve under the Obamas, DesirĂ©e Rogers. Rogers left the post after an incident in late 2009, when two uninvited guests, Tareq and Michaele Salahi (Real Housewives of DC), joined a state dinner for Manmohan Singh, the prime minister of India.  Full story here!

Cape Cod Fireman Loses Job After Antigay Facebook Slurs

A firefighter in Bourne, Mass., has been terminated after posting antigay slurs on Facebook.
Richard Doherty, a veteran firefighter of 16 years, reportedly used foul language and bigoted remarks last summer while slamming local police officers, his deputy fire chief, and the town of Bourne itself.

Town Administrator Thomas Guarino said, “Firefighter Doherty has disqualified himself from the ability to serve as a firefighter because he elected to post on the Internet a message that causes the public to question whether he can serve all of its citizens.”  Full story here!

Craigslist GOP Rep. Wanted Trans Women

Two transgender women have come forward claiming to have been contacted on Craigslist by former Rep. Christopher Lee, who they claim was looking for a casual encounter.

Lee quickly left office after it was discovered he was looking for dates on the site, despite being married with a child. However, the two transgender women, identified as Fiona and Holly, toldGawkerthat they came across posts from Lee in January looking for "a sexy ts/cd that i can spoil. I promise not to disappoint."

Lee described himself as "New to area. Very fit classy, successful guy. 39, 6ft 190lbs, blond/blue. smooth hard body."

Corresponding with Fiona, Lee said he dated a transgender woman while at business school at Chapman University. She told him on January 21 that she figured out who he was by looking up his e-mail address on Facebook. He did not answer back, but reportedly told his congressional staff that his e-mail account was hacked into. (Source-Advocate)

Gay Man Wins Landmark Suit To Inherit Late Husband's Estate

A New York state appeals court has ruled that a gay man married in Canada has the right to inherit the estate of his late husband, despite claims by the husband's family that their marriage was invalid. While same-sex couples can't wed in the state, J. Craig Leiby and H. Kenneth Ranftle were legally married in Canada, so Leiby is entitled to recognition as the surviving spouse in a dispute over Ranftle's estate, the appellate judges said. Ranftle died Nov. 1, 2008. His brother Richard contested the will and challenged the legitimacy of the marriage, saying it violated state policy. But the state Supreme Court's Appellate Division wrote, "New York's long-settled marriage recognition rule affords [recognition] to out-of-state marriages" that are valid where they are made.  (Source-JMG)

GOP Conservatives vow to make Gay Marriage 2012 issue

Angered conservatives are vowing to make same-sex marriage a front-burner election issue, nationally and in the states, following the Obama administration’s announcement that it will no longer defend the federal law denying recognition to gay married couples.

"The ripple effect nationwide will be to galvanize supporters of marriage," said staff counsel Jim Campbell of Alliance Defense Fund, a conservative legal group.

On the federal level, opponents of same-sex marriage urged Republican leaders in the House of Representatives to intervene on their own to defend the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA, against pending court challenges.  Full story here!

DOMA Decision Re-Ignites Fiscal vs. Social Conservatism Debate

Voters in the last election signaled a wish for the government’s focus to be economic priorities, not divisive social issues. But anti-gay social conservatives have sworn to put gay and lesbian families front and center in the next election following the Obama Administration’s decision not to defend the "Defense of Marriage " Act (DOMA) in federal court, saying that the 1996 law is unconstitutional and discriminatory.

The question is: Will the decision spur so-called "values voters" to the ballot box? Or has acceptance of gays and their families grown so prevalent--and the ongoing economic crisis become such an overriding concern--that the anti-gay right’s tactic will prove self-defeating?  Full story here!
