I just wanted to say Good Morning!  I hope everyone is having an amazing weekend so far and for my East Coast USA readers, I hope you are staying warm.

I wanted to open the blog up this morning and ask people to post in the comments section below stories or links to stories, photos, songs, fave blogs, websites, charities, etc that you think may be of interest to other Wicked Gay Blog readers.

IS THE PHRASE GAY REPUBLICAN A CONTRADICTION IN TERMS??

"Recently I have been thinking about how conflicting being a Republican and being openly gay must be in America in 2011. Let’s face it The GOP have done nothing for gay rights and have set the movement back considerably. I would be the first to say that you cannot agree with every single fundament of your parties agenda but surely it must conflict you to your very core to follow a party that doesn’t support your basic right to love and to be who you are.

Gay friends of mine who are vehemently Republican would have supported Bush to the hilt even with his administrations position on gay marriage and gay rights. My challenges to these discriminatory policies where tagged as being unpatriotic. Surely we cannot be expected to blindly agree with every decision and policy for fear of being deemed unpatriotic? The line has to be drawn somewhere or surely we will forever be waiting for the right time for change.

Sadly I am convinced that the phrase Gay Republican is an oxymoron and that clearly the best thing Gay Republicans can do if they want their rights and opinions to be represented adequately is not to vote Republican. As I previously stated you cannot agree with everything your party says or believes but when they cannot support your basic rights as a human being how can you continue to support them?

Change is not something we should just hope and pray for we have to exercise constitutional rights and use the systems at hand to affect it. I know some people will say they are fundamentally Republican but that doesn’t change your sexuality or your right to equality. When older Republicans stop hanging on to the past and excusing discrimination with exquisite phraseology America will be a better place." Full story here!

If not....I have just one question I have been wanting to ask.  I have heard the phrase "not a one issue voter" said over and over again but I NEED to know what issues (name just one) are more important to a gay Republican than YOUR civil rights or your being treated as equal as any other law abiding tax paying American?  I just need to know one!

It appears Leather and perhaps the Leather community will some day soon go out to pasture if the feedback from my friends under 30 is accurate.  When I mention leather, leather bars, or the leather community they look at me like I am a star in a Frankie Goes to Hollywood video.

Wicked Deserved :: Naval Academy Honors Gay Marine's Burial Request

The Naval Academy has honored the final wishes of a gay Marine who had told his husband that he wanted his ashes interred at the USNA Columbarium. John Fliszar was a 1971 graduate of the Academy, but what's so heartwarming is how the Academy treated his husband, Mark Ketterson.

The memorial coordinator asked about his relationship to the deceased. Ketterson said that John Fliszar was his husband. “They were always polite, but there was this moment of hesitation,” Ketterson recalled. “They said they’re going to need something in writing from a blood relative. They asked, ‘Are you listed on the death certificate?’ ‘Do you have a marriage license?’ ” He was and they did, the couple having been married in Des Moines when gay marriage became legal in Iowa two years ago. Ketterson sent a copy of the marriage license. That changed everything.

“I was respected,” he said. “From that moment on, I was next of kin. They were amazing.” The USNA alumni association sent Ketterson a letter expressing condolence for the loss of his husband. The USNA says Fliszar’s interment followed standard operating procedure. “His next of kin was treated with the same dignity and respect afforded to the next of kin of all USNA grads who desire interment at the Columbarium,” said Jennifer Erickson, a spokesperson for the academy. “We didn’t do anything differently.”

It is the 25th anniversary of the Challenger disaster and I remember it like it were yesterday. I was in junior high at the time and my principal called us all into the cafeteria to share the horrific news and TV's were turned on so we could watch. After he turned the TV's off we prayed and then were sent home to be with our family.

Hawaii Senate passes same-sex civil unions

The Hawaii Senate has passed a bill creating civil unions for same-sex couples, rushing it on a path toward becoming law.

The Senate voted 19-6 for the bill Friday, sending it to the state House of Representatives for additional consideration.

Hawaii would become the sixth state to grant some of the rights of marriage to same-sex couples without authorizing marriage itself. A civil unions bill also passed the Illinois Legislature last month.

Democrats, who control the Hawaii Legislature, have said they plan to approve the bill quickly this year and send it to new Democratic Gov. Neil Abercrombie for his signature. Abercrombie has said he supports civil unions.

A similar bill was vetoed last year by then-Gov. Linda Lingle, a Republican.

Kelly Osbourne's Fiancé Left for Trans Woman

When Kelly Osbourne's fiancé, Luke Worrall, left her last year, it was for transgender model Elle Schneider, according to Us Weekly.

Schnieder said she was approached by Worrall, also a model, at a club in New Yorl. She said she did not know Worrall was engaged to Osbourne, the daughter of Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne, and a gay rights supporter.

Schnieder told Us Weekly that after exchanging numbers, she and Worrell spent the night together.

The owners of a gay bar in Manchester, England have come under fire for posting a job listing seeking exclusively heterosexual employees.

The AXM Group is seeking "flyerers" for its new bar Downtown. According to PinkPaper.com, the ad, posted on the bar's Facebook page, read: "JOBS: Looking for flyerers/pr people for Downtown. Ideally 2 blokes/1 girl. Straight, Good looking, Outgoing etc. 20 hours per week, £6 an hour. Hours may vary. Interested?"

Prominent Ugandan Gay Activist Murdered

Uganda has made a name for itself as the worst African nation for homophobia. Invaded by rabidly anti-gay Evangelical American preachers, the nation’s legislators have put forward a bill that activists compare to the 1933 Nuremberg Laws in Germany that set the stage for the Holocaust.

The New York Times reports that one of the activists headlined "Hang Them" was beaten to death in his home.

David Kato, an outspoken activist in a nation where gay men and lesbians fearfully hide their identity, was one of the most visible gay men in in the East African nation. He was attacked in his home on Jan. 26 and beaten in the head with a hammer.   Full story here!

First Out-Gay U.S. Federal Judge Nominated

President Barack Obama has nominated an out-gay lawyer to become a federal judge. If he is confirmed by the U.S. Senate, he will be the first openly gay such judge in the country.

The New York Times reports that J. Paul Oetken, 45, is a former lawyer in the Clinton administration. He currently serves as a senior vice-president and associate general counsel of cable TV giant Cablevision.

Another openly gay man’s nomination for a federal court is also pending: Edward C. DuMont, nominated for the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C. Full story here!
