Are you sick of Political Attack ads currently running in the USA?

It seems that every single commercial is a political attack ad and it is so nauseating.  Both sides have gone way too far (or should I say all 3 groups, Republican, Democrat, and Tea-Party.)

Blimey! I Kissed a Bloke... And I Liked It! :: Brit Boys’ Same-Sex Face-Sucking Epidemic

Straight boys in Britain have found a new way to bond with their male friends: a kiss here and there, none of which is seen by the boys as sexual.

A new study suggests that locking lips with same-sex friends is no longer viewed as "gay" among British lads. The study, carried out among British high schoolers and university students by Bath University researcher Eric Anderson, indicates that the British male is becoming "nicer," reported LiveScience on Oct. 27. All the participants in the study said they were heterosexual--but kissing their male pals didn’t present a conflict to them, because they didn’t think of kissing one another as a sexual act. "These men have lost their homophobia," Anderson told the press. "They’re no longer afraid to be thought gay by their behaviors, and they enjoy intimacy with their friends, just the same as women." Anderson’s study was published online with scholarly journal Archives of Sexual Behavior, which is published by the International Academy of Sex Research.

Anderson pinpointed the trend as starting in the sporting world. Soccer players began to kiss as part of their ecstatic celebrations after scoring; they carried the kissing into their off-field lives and into nightclubs and bars. Kissing male friends thus became something that macho straights do. "It’s like, ’John! Rawr!’ More exuberance," explained Anderson. To be sure, the report indicated that kissing among male friends was more prevalent among athletes than among those who did not play team sports.  Full story here via Edge!

Halliburton and BP knew that the Deepwater Horizon rig was facing serious structural problems before the April 20 blowout, according to the presidential commission investigating the accident. The commission staff determined that Halliburton conducted tests indicating that the cement at the rig was not up to industry standards, but did not take action.

According to the Pentagon’s DADT survey findings reported yesterday, a majority of service members “would not object to serving and living alongside openly gay troops.” The survey’s results will be included in the Pentagon’s report for President Obama on December 1 regarding how the military would end the DADT policy.

The EPA has again delayed a decision on whether to adopt tougher smog standards, a proposal that was opposed by oil refiners, manufacturers, and some Democrats running for office. The decision, scheduled for Sunday, has been put off indefinitely, and an EPA spokesman said the department was “working to ensure we get it right.”

Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin opened the door slightly to a run for president in 2012, telling Entertainment Tonight that she would put her hat in the ring “if there’s nobody else to do it.” She said she’ll take a “real close look at the lay of the land” to see “whether there are already candidates out there who can do the job and I’ll get to be their biggest supporter and biggest helpmate if they will have me.”

John Perry on Obama's Pro-Gay Record

"In under two years, President Obama and his record number of LGBT appointees have accomplished so much for LGBT Americans. His and Congress’s historic achievement of securing health care reform finally cements the most important protections for those in our community who need them most – especially those living with HIV and AIDS.

"Hospital visitation rights for all Americans, expanded benefits for the same-sex domestic partners of Federal workers, enactment of the hate crimes law, increased coverage for those living with HIV/AIDS, Federal support for LGBT community-based organizations, anti-bullying programs enacted in schools, support for our aging LGBT population, and so much more. These are real, concrete achievements that are saving and improving the lives of countless LGBT Americans right now." Full quote here via Joe My God!

McCain Daughter Seeks National Voice

When Meghan McCain said on national TV recently that Senate GOP hopeful Christine O’Donnell "is seen as a nut job," the reaction from the right was swift and furious, with critics bashing everything from McCain’s lack of experience to her judgment to, well, her anatomy.

So now that she’s had time to reflect - after all, she does call herself "a work in progress" - would she like to tone it down a notch?

Um, no.

"I DO think she’s a nut job," the very uninhibited, 26-year-old daughter of John McCain said in an interview this week. "I say what I mean and I mean what I say. I wish more for politics, and I wish more for women in politics."

And, of course, for her party. Since her father’s 2008 loss, McCain, who made a name for herself with a campaign blog, McCainblogette, and now blogs for The Daily Beast, has been trying to establish herself as a voice for young, socially moderate, disaffected Republicans like herself.

"Rather than leading us into the exhilarating fresh air of liberty, a chorus of voices on the radical right is taking us to a place of intolerance and anger," McCain writes of the GOP in her new campaign memoir, "Dirty Sexy Politics."  Full story here via Edge!

Most US troops, families say gays OK

An internal Pentagon study has found that most U.S. troops and their families don’t care whether gays are allowed to serve openly and think the policy of "don’t ask, don’t tell" could be done away with, according to officials familiar with its findings.

The survey results were expected to be used by gay rights advocates to bolster their argument that the 1993 law on gays could be repealed immediately with little harm done to the military. But the survey also was expected to reveal challenges the services could face in overturning the long-held policy, including overcoming fierce opposition in some parts of the military even if they represent a minority.

Details on the survey results were still scarce Thursday, with the Pentagon declining to discuss the findings until after Dec. 1 when it rolls out its own plan for repeal.  Full story here via Edge!

Bracing for Midterms :: Will Republicans Reverse Advancement of LGBT Rights?

Despite significant disappointment - or even anger - from many LGBT advocates and activists about the lack of progress toward LGBT equality achieved in the 111th Congress, the legislative landscape for LGBT equality could look far bleaker in the new year.

When the 112th Congress opens in January 2011, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) - which was unable to get any movement thus far in the 111th Congress - faces the potential loss of several of its significant boosters in the Senate, including Sens. Russ Feingold (D-Wisc.) and Patty Murray (D-Wash.).

More significantly and increasingly likely, ENDA and all other LGBT priorities face the strong likelihood of a House speaker named John Boehner (R-Ohio). In vigorously opposing the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act in October 2009, Boehner said, ’’The Democrats’ ’thought crimes’ legislation ... places a higher value on some lives than others.’’  Full story here via Edge!

2 students involved with internet stream withdraw after Rutgers suicide

Two Rutgers University freshmen, accused of secretly broadcasting a classmate’s sexual encounter online, have withdrawn from the school. The classmate later committed suicide.

Attorney Steven Altman says that means Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei will not face university disciplinary hearings.

Altman, who represents Ravi, told The Home News Tribune of East Brunswick his client plans to attend school somewhere else.

Wei’s attorney, Rubin Sinins, told The Star-Ledger of Newark his client feared for her safety.

Ravi and Wei have been charged with invasion of privacy.

Authorities say Ravi used a webcam to capture his roommate, Tyler Clementi, having a sexual encounter with another man.

Clementi jumped to his death from the George Washington Bridge days later.

Prosecutors are considering hate crime charges.  (Source-Edge New England)

Transgender Prostitute Beats Up Would-Be Robber

A teen thought that a cross-dressing hooker would be an easy mark, found himself on the receiving end of a beating when he tried to rob him, according to an Oct. 26 story published in the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Rufus Bowman, 16, targeted Joshua Bumpus as a robbery victim, luring him into an alley under the pretense of wanting to solicit his services. But Bumpus, who stands 6’ 1" and weighs 290 pounds according to jail records, wasn’t intimidated by the 5’ 7" youth, even though Bowman had a gun-and used it. Bowman shot Bumpus once, but that didn’t stop Bumpus, who wrested the gun from Bowman’s grasp and proceeded to "beat the daylights out of him," in the words of Assistant Hamilton County Prosecutor Ryan Nelson.

Wicked Well Said :: Michelangelo Signorile

"The Republican Party would like nothing better than to see the discontent in the Democratic base help them install truly the most extreme lot of candidates we have seen in many years. We've exposed the tea party as nothing more than a reconfiguration of all the religious zealots, moral crusaders, racists and bigots who've been around for years. Do not attempt to punish the President or the Democrats by punishing yourself. This country has been in a very precarious state for a long time, in which the political winds can usher in something radical and extreme very quickly. Bad economic times are always an opportunity for those who seek to do that. We have and will demand full accountability by the Democrats and president -- who is not on the ballot until 2012 -- but don't do it by giving power to your enemies." - SiriusXM radio host Michelangelo Signorile.   (Source-JMG)

Arkansas School Board Member Hails Gay Suicides in Facebook Post

In response to Spirit Day--a day organized through Facebook on which GLBTs and supporters would wear purple in honor of bullied gay teens who committed suicide--a member of an Arkansas school board posted a message on Facebook that has been seen as a call for gay youths to kill themselves.

The message was posted by Midland school district member Clint McCance. The Advocate reported on the anti-gay Facebook posting on Oct. 26. "While schools across the country are taking action against bullying and suicide, a board member of an Arkansas school district is using his Facebook page to encourage ’queers’ and ’fags’ to kill themselves," The Advocate’s story said.  Full story here via Edge!

TV commercials shrink to match attention spans

And now, a word from our sponsors. A very brief word.

TV commercials are shrinking along with attention spans and advertising budgets. The 15-second ad is increasingly common, gradually supplanting the 30-second spot just as it knocked off the full-minute pitch decades ago.

For viewers, it means more commercials in a more rapid-fire format. For advertisers, shorter commercials are a way to save some money, and research shows they hold on to more eyeballs than the longer format.  Full story here via Edge!

Companies fight to keep global warming data secret

Some of the country’s largest emitters of heat-trapping gases, including businesses that publicly support efforts to curb global warming, don’t want the public knowing exactly how much they pollute.

Oil producers and refiners, along with manufacturers of steel, aluminum and even home appliances, are fighting a proposal by the Environmental Protection Agency that would make the amount of greenhouse gas emissions that companies release - and the underlying data businesses use to calculate the amounts - available online.  Full story here via Edge!

’New MySpace’ narrows focus to entertainment

MySpace, the online social hub that’s been fighting to stay relevant in the age of Facebook and Twitter, is overhauling its image and its website into an entertainment destination for its mostly younger audience.

The social-networking pioneer, which was among the top Internet sites just a few years ago, now has its sights set decidedly lower. Starting Wednesday and over the next month, MySpace will be relaunching its site to focus on giving users more ways to consume music, videos and celebrity gossip.  Full story here via Edge!

Anti-Gay Quote Of The Day - Rebecca Kleefisch

"This is a slippery slope. In addition to that at what point are we going to be okay marrying inanimate objects? Can I marry this table or this, you know, clock? Can we marry dogs? Eye on America...

“Across Washington, lobbyists have been working behind the scenes now for months to prepare for this possible” GOP takeover of Congress. The power shift has “generated excitement” among oil and gas lobbyists, who, along with their colleagues in other industries such as finance and health care, have been donating heavily to would-be GOP committee chairs.

Anticipating the arrival of new Republican members of Congress, the House
Republican Study Committee is asking potential job applicants to who want to work in the House to “fill out ideological surveys on the websites of two conservative organizations.” Applicants are then asked to “rate” their level of disagreement with organizations like the Center for American Progress.

The New York Times reports that opponents of ObamaCare have spent $108 million since March to advertise against it, more than six times the amount that supporters have spent.

Television stations in two states have pulled advertisements by the American Action Network, a conservative 501(c)(4) headed by former Senators Norm Coleman and George Allen, because the ads contained flagrant falsehoods: an ad running in Connecticut claimed one would be jailed for not obtaining health insurance under recent health care reform laws, and another in Colorado said the reforms provided Viagra to rapists. The group does not disclose its donors.

A federal appeals court has overturned an Arizona law passed in 2004 that required voters to prove their citizenship at the polls. Governor Jan Brewer (R) slammed the ruling, calling it a “outrage and a slap in the face to all Arizonans.”

According to U.S. military and intelligence officials’ latest assessments, the military campaign “aimed at crippling the Taliban” in Afghanistan has left the Taliban “unscathed.” While escalated airstrikes and special operations raids have disrupted Taliban movements, insurgents have adeptly absorbed the blows and “appear confident that they can outlast” the troop buildup set to subside beginning next July.

This afternoon, President Obama will become the first sitting president to appear on Comedy Central’s “the Daily Show” with “comedian-turned-activist” Jon Stewart. Obama’s appearance, according to White House officials, is an attempt to “seek out young Democratic voters wherever they spend the most time.”

And finally: California GOP gubernatorial nominee Meg Whitman has spent about $140 million of her own money on her campaign — enough to send “two medium pizzas, with two toppings each, to every household in California.” The Los Angeles Times’ Steve Lopez offers some other “more worthwhile causes” the money could have gone to, such as a new Toyota Corolla for every resident of Ojai, CA — population 7,800.

Anti-Violence Project: Recent alleged hate crimes "a wake-up call"

Headlines announcing yet another alleged anti-LGBT hate or bias-motivated crime in the five boroughs have become tragically routine in recent weeks.

From the Bronx to Staten Island and the Stonewall Inn itself (and other places in between,) these attacks have shaken LGBT New Yorkers. The challenge before activists, however, remains how to effectively reduce the rate and severity of anti-LGBT hate and bias-motivated crimes.

Sharon Stapel, executive director of the New York City Anti-Violence Project, stressed to EDGE there are two specific ways to tackle the problem: Passing LGBT-inclusive legislation at the federal level and highlighting the connection between hate speech and rhetoric and violence. Stapel did not specifically mention Republican gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino’s controversial comments at a Brooklyn synagogue earlier this month, but she singled out "so-called community leaders" who take anti-LGBT positions to "further an agenda."  Full story here via Edge!

Charges dropped against 3 in NYC anti-gay attacks

Prosecutors on Tuesday dropped charges against three people accused of taking part in anti-gay attacks on two men and two teens, citing a lack of evidence.

Bryan Almonte and Brian Cepeda, both 17, and Steven Carabello, 16, had been charged with robbery, gang assault and unlawful imprisonment as hate crimes in the Oct. 3 attacks.

Eight other people remain accused in the case, which city officials called the worst anti-gay attacks in recent history. It’s possible more people will be arrested because investigators are still working.

Family members and friends cheered outside court after the charges were dismissed, and the three boys’ attorneys said they were pleased with the outcome. Almonte’s attorney John O’Connell said his client thought he was at a party in the abandoned home where prosecutors say three of the victims were assaulted.

"He’s a victim here," O’Connell said.

Almonte’s girlfriend, 14-year-old Paola Suarez, said she was "so happy because my baby is getting out."  Full story here via Edge!
