Mich. High School Students Fight for a Transgender Prom King
Like all transgendered individuals, Oak--the name is short for "Oakleigh"-- doesn’t see himself as belonging to the gender of his body. His mind and personality--his sense of himself--are male, and he’s generally accepted as such by his teachers, who call him by masculine pronouns, reported Grand Rapids news channel WOOD-8 on Sept. 26.
But that acceptance of Oak’s gender identity did not extend to his run for Homecoming King. Oak mounted a campaign for the title that the administration of Mona Shores High School quickly shut down.
"I just said, ’Vote for me for homecoming king,’ " Oak said of his Facebook-based campaign. "I don’t see why there’s any reasons why someone who’s different shouldn’t be on court. I thought, ’Hey, why not put myself out there? I have just as much qualifications as anyone else in the school.’ " Full story here via Edge!

Oklahoma Town Approves GLBT History Month
The city council of Norman, Okla., spent four hours on an agenda item that called for the proclamation, with heated input from locals, reported local newspaper The Norman Transcript on Sept. 29.
"It’s a slippery slope that will lead to many other things," warned one member of the public, Keith Steincamp.

Are Americans too Lazy to Understand Health Care Reform?
What the bill DOES do:
- Protects us from being dropped by our health insurance companies when we get sick for “pre-existing conditions”.
- Prevents insurance companies from refusing coverage to children with pre-existing conditions (the same for adults will go into effect in 2014).
- Allows parents to cover their dependent children up to the age of 27.
- Gives tax breaks to small businesses as an incentive to buy health insurance for their employees.
- Sets up giant pools of uninsured people so that they may collectively bargain for cheaper health care plans (starting in 2014). These pools for “high risk” people with pre-existing conditions exist already.
- Provides assistance for people or families that can not afford health care on their own.
- Bans co-pays for preventative care and checkups on new plans. (This will apply to all plans by 2018).
- Seniors on Medicare will get money back for prescription drug purchases.
- Health care companies must be more transparent in reporting costs, and they must provide appeals processes for coverage and claims decisions to their consumers.
The Health Care Bill will add to the federal deficit.
Wrong. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) and the Joint Commission on Taxation (JCT) estimate that the health care bill will reduce the federal budget by $143 billion by 2019, and by $1.2 trillion in the following ten years. Furthermore, they estimate that 32 million uninsured people will be covered by 2019 as a result of the bill.

Gay California 13-Year-Old Dies--Youth Hung Himself After ’Years’ of Bullying
The article reported that Seth was harassed even on Sept. 19, the day he hung himself in his back yard. Police said that after investigating the boy’s suicide attempt, they determined that no criminal charges would be brought. "Several of the kids that we talked to broke down into tears," the town’s police chief, Jeff Kermode, told the news channel. "They had never expected an outcome such as this." Asher Brown was a straight-A student, the article said, but he came in for harassment at school because of his religion and because he didn’t dress the way some of his peers expected he should. Asher’s parents told the media that their son was "bullied to death" by schoolmates, and said that the harassment Asher endured even took the form of simulated sex acts forced on the boy in gym class. The bullies, the bereaved parents said, called Asher gay and tormented him "relentlessly," even as Asher’s parents attempted on numerous occasions over the last year and a half to get school administrators to intervene. Obama: Democratic voter apathy ’inexcusable’
Admonishing his own party, President Barack Obama says it would be "inexcusable" and "irresponsible" for unenthusiastic Democratic voters to sit out the midterm elections, warning that the consequences could be a squandered agenda for years.
"People need to shake off this lethargy. People need to buck up," Obama told Rolling Stone in an interview to be published Friday. The president told Democrats that making change happen is hard and "if people now want to take their ball and go home, that tells me folks weren’t serious in the first place."
The midterm elections are in five weeks and polling shows that Republicans, out of power at the White House and on Capitol Hill, have a much more excited base of supporters than Democrats. Airlines’ Big Deal: Southwest Airlines to Buy AirTran for $1.4 Billion
The two airlines primarily overlap in the Baltimore and Orlando markets. Passengers traveling to and from those cities could face higher ticket prices because less competition traditionally means higher airfares.
The acquisition moves Southwest into 37 new cities. The largest of those is Atlanta, where Delta Air Lines is based. Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International airport is the nation’s busiest, and a primary hub for business travelers, a group that Southwest has increasingly been targeting because they tend to pay higher fares.
The acquisition also gives Southwest a bigger slice of the market in cities like Boston and New York, major East Coast cities, where it has been expanding. Full story here via Edge!

Segway owner dies in Segway accident
The body of 62-year-old Jimi Heselden and a Segway personal transporter were found in the River Wharfe and he was pronounced dead at the scene, West Yorkshire Police said. Full story here via Edge!
