Mexico City Hopes to Attract Gay Marrieds

Not only has Mexico City extended marriage equality to the city’s gay and lesbian families, but now the metropolis seeks to become a honeymoon destination for same-sex couples married in other counties.

As part of a promotion deigned to draw married gay tourists and their money to the Mexican capital, the city is treating Argentina’s first legally married same-sex couple to an all expenses paid sojourn, reported CNN.com on Aug. 31.

"We hope that many same-sex couples who get married around the world spend their honeymoons here," said Mexico City tourism secretary Alejandro Rojas, going on to note, "We are a very tolerant, liberal, avant-garde city." Full story here via Edge!

Calif. Finally Ends Law to ’Cure’ Homosexuals

A vintage anti-gay law that remained on California’s books for six decades is finally about to be put to rest. The law, which had become controversial in recent years, directed that the state’s mental health agency seek a "cure" for gays. The law was first approved in 1950, and remained in place even when the American Psychiatric Association removed homosexuality from its list of mental illnesses in 1973. Full story here via Edge!

NZ Denies ’Ex Gay’ Group Charity Status

The New Zealand arm of "ex gay" group Exodus has lost a bid to gain charity status, because the government there says that being gay is okay--and not a disease requiring charitable support, reported GayNZ.com in an Aug. 30 article.

The group says that they offer services that are valuable to gays who are going through "very difficult times," much as a charity for GLBT youth, Rainbow Youth, does.

But the agency that made the decision, the Charities Commission, was not convinced by this argument. In is decision against Exodus, the Commission noted that Exodus laid out its mission as follows: "To promote the teaching that... God gives to human kind the gift of sex for procreation and the expression of love and pleasure in the context of a heterosexual and monogamous marriage and that deviations from this including homosexuality are morally wrong." Seeking Spousal Sentiments #DADT

Members of the Pentagon working group reviewing ’’Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’’ repeal implementation are looking for opportunities to meet with the same-sex partners of current servicemembers, a Pentagon spokeswoman told Metro Weekly on Aug. 18.

The news came as word spread that the Pentagon would be mailing 150,000 surveys - since mailed on Aug. 20 - to opposite-sex spouses of current servicemembers. The spouses’ surveys will be due back to the working group by Sept. 27.

Among the questions asked in the survey, a copy of which was obtained by Politico on the evening of Aug. 20, was, ’’Has your spouse ever worked on a daily basis with an individual he or she believed to be a homosexual Service member?’’ Full story here via Edge!

Wicked Bummer :: Orlando's Parliament House In Foreclosure

Houston-based Southwest Guaranty Ltd. and Compass Bank of Alabama initiated foreclosure actions against the property on North Orange Blossom Trail in July over a $7.5 million mortgage that matured at the end of 2009. Attorneys for the creditors said Monday they expect it will taken over this week by a court-appointed receiver, which would continue the club's operations under court orders. Entrepreneur Donald Granastein and his wife purchased it in 1999 and have operated it since then. The couple have been credited with renovating and reinvigorating the somewhat-faded landmark on the western edge of downtown. Granastein said Monday he didn't have the money to repay the note when it came due. He added that he holds the liquor license and expects to continue operating it, even under a receiver. "Am I happy with this? That's a big no," he said. "But I'm stuck with whatever happens, and we will be open 100 percent."

GEORGIA: No Hates Crime Charges For Marines That Beat Gay Man

"In June two U.S. Marines were arrested in Savannah, Georgia after viciously beating a gay man they claimed had winked at them. The victim was hospitalized after suffering two seizures at the site of the attack. The case prompted national outrage and a local protest vigil after the men were only charged with misdemeanor assault. On Friday a joint investigation by the FBI and local police concluded that the case did not merit any hate crimes charges." Full story here via JMG!

BREAKING: Rush to the store, because your bottle of poppers just became a collector's item

"According to a local video-shop professional, the company that makes Rush poppers has gone out of business. An FYF friend (really, it's not me) just texted me the news and followed with a confirmation:

My friendly porno video guy just told me. I just got the last bottle! Not the best poppers, but it's an end of an icon.

Once home, a quick check of sites that were part of the Rush trade dress (neverfakeit.com, sellrush.com and rushliquidinsense.com) showed all to have had their websites shuttered. Not wanting to cause a "rush" on the product based on false information, more research was done." Full story here!

Loyola Researches Announce Breakthrough In HIV Study

Researchers at Loyola University Health Systems announced an important breakthrough Aug. 20, one that could lead to a treatment that destroys the HIV virus.

Senior researcher Edward Campbell and his colleagues reported that they’ve identified key components of a protein called TRIM5a that kills the virus in rhesus monkeys. The finding could lead to TRIM5a-based treatments for people that would "knock out" the HIV virus.

The Loyola team started studying TRIM5a after other researchers reported in 2004 that it protects rhesus monkeys from HIV by first latching onto the virus; other TRIM5a proteins then "gang up" on the virus and destroy it, the researchers found. Full story here via Edge!

New study examines young LGBT smokers

A new report from the National LGBTQ Young Adult Tobacco Project, entitled "Coming Out About Smoking: Tobacco Use in the LGBTQ Young Adult Community" and released Aug. 24, revealed that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender young adults have higher rates of smoking than their heterosexual peers. Results indicated that the disparity could be due to the added pressure and stress gay teens experience as a result of anti-LGBT discrimination at school and at home. Full story here via Edge!

A Madonna–Lady Gaga World Tour Could Be in the Works

Madonna wants Lady Gaga to open for her next year, British papers are reporting today, adding that Madonna is "absolutely obsessed" with Gaga. "She thinks she is the most cutting-edge star to come out of pop in ages and desperately wants to work with her," an anonymous person told News of the World. The sourcing on this story is a little suspect, but it's also very plausible that Madonna would be interested in a moneymaking tour with the young lady who is arguably her protégée. And while the inexhaustible Madge has only just returned from her Sticky 'N' Sweet tour, she's reportedly "locked into another deal with promoters, and plans are in full swing."

Lady Gaga, too, would probably welcome this press and fanfare, but would touring with the world's biggest pop star clash with her insistent notion that she's the voice of the disenfranchised? Well, reports say Gaga can "name her price" for a Madonna tour, so maybe she can put that idea aside. (Source)

Gay sex sting operations spark controversy, raise questions

LGBT groups in New Jersey continue to seek answers in the fatal police shooting of Defarra "Dean" Gaymon in a popular cruising area in a Newark park on July 16.

As EDGE previously reported, Officer Edward Esposito of the Essex County Sheriff’s Office shot the 48-year-old married father of four and head of the Credit Union of Atlanta in Branch Brook Park, a well-known gay cruising ground. As in similar undercover police operations targeting gay men across the nation, Garden State Equality and the Gender Rights Advocacy Association of New Jersey have demanded the Sheriff’s Office of Essex County put a halt to the stings.

"They have temporarily suspended the sting operations, pending study," said Barbra Casbar Siperstein, director of GRAANJ. "Garden State Equality requested the records of their activities, which they should be receiving this week. The Essex County Executive’s Office is in the process of working with local LGBT community to establish a working group to address all relevant issues with the county and community." How the ’Ex-Gay’ Movement Fosters HIV Infection

A news outlet dedicated to HIV issues says that the "ex-gay industry," whcih is predicated on the claim that gays and lesbains can be "cured" and "converted" to heterosexuality, relies on a fear of AIDS to help spread its message--but that in practical effect, such groups contribute to the spread of the virus.

A POZ article from September, 2010, noted that despite the prevalence of AIDS in Africa as a disease predominantly affecting heterosexuals, Americans persist in believing that it is a "gay disease." Accordingly, Americans are more likely to believe that "converting" gays to straights will combat the spread of the virus because straights, according to this line of reasoning, don’t get AIDS.

Proponents of so-called "reparative therapy," for their part, also harbor beliefs that are not substantiated by science or research. Some claim that homosexuality is not an innate characteristic that individuals are born with, perhaps through some combination of genetics and physiological factors, but rather the result of early-life sexual abuse. Others promote the idea that a person’s sexuality is simply a matter of choice; some blame possession by evil spirits and prescribe exorcisms, the article said. Full story here via Edge!

Paris Hilton busted in Vegas for Cocain possession

Paris Hilton was arrested on the Las Vegas Strip late Friday after a police motorcycle officer smelled marijuana smoke wafting from a black Cadillac Escalade driven by her boyfriend, then found a small amount of cocaine in her purse.

A crowd quickly gathered when Hilton and Las Vegas nightclub mogul Cy Waits were stopped about 11:30 p.m. PDT Friday in the vehicle near the Wynn Las Vegas resort, police said.

The 29-year-old celebrity socialite was taken into the hotel "to keep her safe" during the initial investigation, police Lt. Wayne Holman said.

Police Officer Marcus Martin said the motorcycle officer pulled the Escalade over on Las Vegas Boulevard after noticing smoke that smelled like marijuana. Police later found a substance in Hilton’s purse that tests showed to be cocaine, Martin said. He didn’t say how much of the drug was found.

Hilton was arrested on suspicion of felony cocaine possession. Full story here via Edge!

Minnesota: NOM’s latest target

The National Organization for Marriage has its eyes on the Midwest with a new $200,000 television and radio advertising campaign directed at Minnesota, where the group fears nuptials for gays and lesbians could soon prove a reality.

As part of their effort, NOM, in association with the Minnesota Family Council, has backed Tom Emmer, the controversial Republican gubernatorial candidate (pictured) whom Target indirectly supported. The radio advertisement, which hit the airwaves earlier this month, points out Emmer’s opponents-Democrat-Farmer-Labor candidate Mark Dayton and Independent Tom Horner-as marriage supporters. Is It ’Game Over’ for the Anti-Marriage Right?

Pundits on the left and gay commentators are suggesting that the culture war over GLBT equality--and especially marriage parity--may be winding down.

At Pam’s House Blend, blogger Pam Spaulding, in a posting titled "Game Over, Man," referenced two articles, one at Huffington Post and one at Frum Forum, that expressed the opinion that opponents of GLBT legal and social equality are losing momentum. The posting also noted that high-profile conservatives such as Glenn Beck are now saying that marriage equality is not a threat to American society--or even endorsing family parity for same-sex couples. Meth use among young gay men remains a pervasive problem

By the time Duran was 5, he knew he was different from other boys in his hometown of Puyallup.

In high school, he threw himself into religion and saw a therapist who specialized in reversing homosexuality. He had strained relationships at home.

His senior year he came out about his homosexuality. After graduation he moved in with an older man in Seattle who introduced him to the standard party drugs — ecstasy, ketamine and GHB — and then methamphetamine, or crystal meth.

Just a few years ago, Duran wandered the streets outside Gay City a skeletal form of his current self. Homeless, sick and estranged from his family, he would look away from passers-by, including some of his current colleagues — all the while completely loaded on crystal meth.

"In my brief moments of clarity I knew my life was supposed to be better than this," Duran said. "Growing up I had so many dreams ... but I completely lost myself." Full story here via the Seattle Times!

Five Things Airlines Don't Want You to Know

From pilot fatigue to the water you drink onboard, what you should be aware of before catching a flight

The average airline passenger knows little about the tangles of procedure, technology and bureaucracy involved in the daily operations of a commercial airline. And for the most part, ignorance is bliss. After all, if getting from point A to point B as safely as possible is your main concern, you can rest assured that the U.S. commercial aviation system is among the safest in the world (your chances of dying in an airplane crash in the U.S. is calculated to be one in 13 million). But when it comes to the air you breathe onboard, the coffee you drink and the potentially very tired pilots flying your plane, there are some things the airlines prefer to keep to themselves.
