Target + Best Buy Prove HRC's Corporate Scoring Is Wholly Flawed. Is It Also Meaningless?

Both Target and Best Buy are pointing to their 100 percent scores on the Human Rights Campaign's Corporate Equality Index as reasons why you can't hate them for throwing hundreds of thousands of dollars behind an effort to elect an anti-gay political candidate. Does HRC bear any responsibility for misleading gays about these companies?

Absolutely.

Despite donating money to MN Forward, the business-backed PAC that's trying to get tax hater Tom Emmer elected the next Republican governor of Minnesota, Target and Best Buy's stellar HRC ratings won't change one bit, The Awl's Abe Sauer discovers. How come? According to HRC spokesman Michael Cole, "It’s important to understand that the CEI is a measure of the workplace practices of a company toward its own LGBT employees. We don’t believe that rating companies based upon their political contributions is an accurate reflection of their commitment to LGBT equality in the workplace."

Wicked Cutie X-Factor Winner Joe McElderry: I'm Gay

"Joe McElderry, who won Britain's X-Factor last year, has come out of the closet.

The UK Mirror reports:

"The 19-year-old X Factor winner made the brave decision to come out in an emotional interview with the Mirror, just a week after telling his mum. Joe has always denied rumours he was gay, but insisted the reason was he didn’t know himself until recently. He added: 'I’ve had time to think about things. I wasn’t attracted to anyone anyway, male or female. It never really entered my head I was gay. But I just know. It’s how I feel.' ... But the 19-year-old has now bravely decided to tell the world he is gay – and the denials were down to the fact he never knew himself, until three weeks ago. And he said he is comfortable with his decision to come out publicly, declaring: 'I’m happy. I now know who I am.'"

McElderry says he is not in a relationship." Full story here via Towleroad!

Bristol Palin & Levi Johnston Wedding Off: Engagement Ends

"Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston have reportedly called off their wedding, but not because Levi's ex Lanesia Garcia is pregnant, E! News reports. Even Garcia has admitted that Levi isn't the father of her baby, telling UsMagazine.com, "Point blank, it's not true at all. We haven't hung out at all since 8th or 9th grade when we broke up. I don't know where people are getting this. It's not true at all. Levi is not the father of my baby."

Instead, Bristol and Levi have ended their short engagement because Levi's other ex girlfriend, Briana Plum, said some nasty things about Bristol in an interview. A source told E!, "There was also some picture on Facebook of him and Briana and Bristol just said, 'Let's hold off on the engagement.'"

According to E! News, Bristol nixed the wedding plans about one week after it was announced that she and Levi were engaged. Sarah Palin, who wasn't told of the engagement before it was announced it on the cover of Us, hasn't commented. And no word what the reported split could do to the reality show the pair was rumored to have pitched." (Source)

Defending his tenure as chief executive of BP, Tony Hayward expressed no regrets. “Would I change fundamentally what BP did and the role I played? No,” Hayward said. “I became a villain for doing the right thing,” he whined, adding, “but I understand that people find it easier to vilify an individual more than a company.” Hayward also said he was “wrong” when he said he wanted his “life back.”

The SEC yesterday charged “Samuel and Charles Wyly, the billionaire brothers from Dallas who are large donors to philanthropies and to conservative causes,” with committing $550 million worth of fraud. The SEC case “centers on charges of securities fraud and insider trading related to the shares of companies founded by the Wyly brothers or where they served as directors or executives.”

“A House ethics committee on Thursday brought 13 charges” against Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY), including “failing to report more than $600,000 on his financial disclosure report” and not paying taxes on rental income on a villa he owns in the Dominican Republic. Rangel, who did not attend the committee hearing, angrily claimed in a statement that investigators were trampling on his Constitutional rights.

House Minority Whip Eric Cantor received more than $460,000 in the second quarter from the financial industry, including Goldman Sachs and Bank of America. Public Campaign reports that the sum represents a 32 percent increase from the average of the previous five quarters. HuffPost’s Sam Stein notes that Cantor has been using GOP opposition to Obama’s agenda as a selling point.

Senate Republicans yesterday “rejected a bill to aid small businesses with expanded loan programs and tax breaks” even though several GOP lawmakers helped write it and it had been backed by conservative business groups such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The procedural blockade underscores “how fiercely determined the party’s leaders are to deny Democrats any further legislative accomplishments.”

Hundreds protested Arizona’s new immigration law in downtown Phoenix yesterday as Gov. Jan Brewer (R) filed an appeal of a federal judge’s ruling preventing portions of the law from taking effect. The protesters accused the government of “terrorizing” Hispanics and “blockaded a jail and marched to the offices of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, known for his aggressive stance on illegal immigrants.”

Former USDA employee Shirley Sherrod said yesterday “that she would ‘definitely’ sue conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart over the video that prompted her firing last week.” “At this point, he hasn’t apologized — I don’t want it at this point. And he’ll definitely hear from me,” she said.

Rep. Mike McMahon (D-NY) fired his re-election campaign’s spokesperson last night “after she gave a reporter a breakdown of a Republican rival’s ‘Jewish money’ contributions” in an apparent effort to show the opponent has little support in the district. “There is a lot of Jewish money, a lot of money from people in Florida and Manhattan, retirees,” McMahon’s spokesperson told the New York Observer.

And finally: On Fox and Friends this morning, Robert Gibbs joked that “I want to tell you guys exclusively that I’m leaving the White House briefing room to be a judge on American Idol.” Noting that he has no “discernible musical talent,” Gibbs explained that “there is no better training ground for American Idol” than the White House briefing room.

Right Goes Nuts as Obama Skips Scouts Jamboree, Heads to ’The View’

The president won’t be addressing the Boy Scouts of America at the Scouts’ 100th anniversary Jamboree--but he will be going on national talk show The View. Is it because the Scouts are anti-gay?

Some pundits on the right seem to think so. Actor Chuck Norris, who also serves as a columnist at right-wing site Townhall.com, said as much in a recent posting, where he wrote, "President Obama became the honorary president of the BSA in March 2009, and the White House didn’t even mention it. And ever since, any discussions or interactions with the Scouts have been ’don’t ask, don’t tell.’ And how could they, because the president would then have to acknowledge publicly that as honorary president of BSA, he affirmed the Scouts’ oath, beliefs and policies, which prohibit atheists and agnostics from membership and ’avowed’ homosexuals from leadership roles?"

Norris went on to compare Obama with Pontius Pilate, and to quote Thomas Jefferson as saying, "when injustice becomes law, resistance becomes duty." Full Story here via Edge!

N.J. Activists Up in Arms Over Police Shooting in Park Sex Sting

New Jersey LGBT groups are demanding answers from local officials after an undercover police officer fatally shot a man suspected of soliciting sex in a Newark park.

Garden State Equality and the Gender Rights Advocacy Association of New Jersey suspect a police "sting" operation targeting gay men was to blame for the July 16 shooting death of DeFarra "Dean" Gaymon, a 48-year-old married father of four and head of the Credit Union of Atlanta, in Branch Brook Park, a well-known gay cruising ground. And the groups continue to seek answers from both the Essex County’s Sheriff’s Department and the Essex County Prosecutor’s office.

"We believe any operation targeting people based on their actual or perceived sexual orientation would be a violation of state law," the two groups wrote in a letter to the agencies. "New Jersey’s Law Against Discrimination expressly outlaws discrimination based on actual or perceived sexual orientation. In no way do we condone any violation of lewdness statutes. But any sting operation targeting gay men or LGBT people specifically, or anyone perceived as such, is unconscionable-and as we strongly believe, illegal." Full Story here via Edge!

Palm Springs Revises Policy After Sex Sting Flap

In a symbolic gesture, the Palm Springs city council has affirmed its support for a new police procedure following a controversial gay sex sting last year. The sex sting used decoys, or undercover officers; the controversy arose with charges that gay men were being targeted for arrest, reported local newspaper the Desert Sun on July 29.

The new policy, introduced by the city’s chief of police, David Dominguez, specifies the use of fewer decoys and more marked police vehicles, the article said.

The new policy did not nee the council’s approval. Even so, the council voted unanimously to support it, and issued a statement that read, in part, "Palm Springs has always embraced diversity and tolerance and wants the LGBT community and all visitors to continue to feel safe and welcome in our city at all times."

The article noted that two dozen men were arrested during last year’s sex sting operation in which decoys were used. The arrestees were charged with indecent exposure, a misdemeanor that could still land them on a sexual offenders list. Full story here via Edge!

Discharged, Choi Charges On #DADT

Former Lt. Dan Choi, the face of the movement to repeal the military’s ’’Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’’ policy since coming out on The Rachel Maddow Show in early 2009, was honorably discharged from the New York Army National Guard on June 29, a Guard spokesman confirmed on Wednesday, July 21.

Within a month of his discharge, however, Choi had been arrested once for protesting against Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and celebrated once for an exchange that ended with him hugging the majority leader.

In conjunction with a Get Equal protest shutting down a street on the Las Vegas Strip in protest of Reid’s inaction on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), Choi - along with Get Equal co-director Robin McGehee and six others - was arrested on July 20.

A few days later, on July 24, Choi had arranged with the moderator of a question-and-answer session with Reid and Netroots Nation participants to have Reid given his West Point ring and documents relating to his discharge and Reid’s promise to Choi to keep that from happening. Massachusetts Democratic candidates for Congress open up about LGBT issues

Incumbent Lynch has come a long way in his support, but will challenger D’Alessandro blow him out of the water in the Sept. primary?

Massachusetts’ Ninth Congressional District is in the midst of a political tug-of-war among Democrats, the outcome of which will be seen after the Democratic Congressional Primary on Sept. 14. Both Democratic candidates have pledged to step into the ring on behalf of the LGBT community.

Since his election to the position in 2001, incumbent Rep. Stephen Lynch has made strides in his support for and understanding of LGBT issues, thanks in part to a friendship with openly gay Rep. Barney Frank, as well as close ties with the Human Rights Campaign (HRC). Congressional newcomer Mac D’Alessandro, however, believes that more can be done to protect and serve LGBT citizens living in the Ninth District (which includes parts of Boston and several towns in Bristol, Norfolk, and Plymouth Counties).

"I’m going to be a strong advocate, not just a vote," D’Alessandro told Bay Windows. "I think I’ll be a much stronger champion on these issues than Congressman Lynch has been." Full Story here via Edge/Bay Windows!

Jerusalem hosts subdued gay pride march

Thousands of Israelis marched calmly Thursday in Jerusalem’s longest gay pride parade despite opposition from anti-gay demonstrators.

The subdued march from Jerusalem city center to the parliament building contrasted with flamboyant gay pride parades elsewhere in the world. Organizers said they were adjusting to the city’s religious character and using it to promote their political agenda.

Carrying rainbow banners, several thousand demonstrators walked along the 1.5 mile (2.5 kilometer) route. Absent were standard features of many such parades - multicolor floats carrying scantily and provocatively dressed participants, loud music, wild costumes and explicit public examples of homosexual activity.

Even so, a few dozen black-suited ultra-Orthodox Jewish protesters at the beginning and end of the route held signs denouncing homosexuals, with slogans like "Gays Play in Hell, Not Jerusalem." Many ultra-Orthodox Jews consider homosexuality to be an abomination. Full Story here via Edge!

Protesters bare their chests at Mainestreet in Ogunquit

"Protestors exercised the right to bare skin, taking off their shirts at Mainestreet on Saturday, July 24, in reaction to a town request that bartenders at the club stop going topless. .

Hundreds of people, including town officials, friends of the bar and local bar owners, attended the event at the popular gay bar, some traveling from as far as Washington D.C. to show their support.

"In D.C., everybody on Facebook was talking about this," said Jeff Seese, who arrived with over 10 of his friends in a white stretch-Hummer limousine. Seese had plans to visit a wedding in Kennebunk that weekend.

The controversy was sparked July 12, when Code Enforcement Officer Paul Lempicki told Mainestreet owner Norm Paquin to make sure his bartenders covered up their bare chests and asked him to conceal "whiskey bottles" visible from the street on the bar's outdoor deck.

Lempicki later called the topless pourers a "health hazard."

The code enforcement officer said he was acting on behalf of the town, which had received complaints about the shirtless bartenders and liquor bottles. Town Manager Tom Fortier said resident Harriet Yaffe was the lead spokesperson behind the complaints.

Yaffe said she has "no problems" with gay men, but feels the sight of the shirtless bartenders, along with liquor bottles on the patio, is "tacky." Full story here via Seacoast Online!

Ellen DeGeneres Leaving American Idol

"Ellen DeGeneres announced this evening she is leaving American Idol after just one season:

"A couple months ago, I let FOX and the 'American Idol' producers know that this didn't feel like the right fit for me. I told them I wouldn't leave them in a bind and that I would hold off on doing anything until they were able to figure out where they wanted to take the panel next. It was a difficult decision to make, but my work schedule became more than I bargained for. I also realized this season that while I love discovering, supporting and nurturing young talent, it was hard for me to judge people and sometimes hurt their feelings. I loved the experience working on 'Idol' and I am very grateful for the year I had. I am a huge fan of the show and will continue to be."

Apparently Kara DioGuardi has been fired, and reports are the new judge panel will consist of Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler, and J-Lo." (Source-Towleroad)

Hawaii lawsuit seeks equal rights for gay couples #equality #glbt

Six gay couples in Hawaii are filing a lawsuit Thursday asking for the same rights as married couples, three weeks after Gov. Linda Lingle vetoed a same-sex civil unions measure.

The lawsuit doesn’t seek the titles of "marriage" or "civil unions" for gay partners. Instead, it requests that the court system extend them the benefits and responsibilities of marriage based on the Hawaii Constitution’s prohibition against sex discrimination.

"We continue to be discriminated against," said plaintiff Suzanne King, who has been in a relationship with her partner for 29 years. "We’re a family unit, and we live our lives just like everyone else, but we aren’t treated the same." Full story here via Edge!

Survey: Strong Support Among Catholics for Marriage Equality

"A survey of Catholics in the state of California shows that a significant percentage support marriage equality for gay and lesbian families, reported CatholicCulture.org on July 27.

The Public Religion Research Institute polled 3,000 Catholics in California on the question, and discovered that among Caucasian adherents of the faith, 37% were supportive of marriage rights for gays and lesbians, with Latino Catholics outstripping that number and weighing in at 44% in favor of full family parity. Conversely, 41% of Caucasian Catholics favored civil unions--while among Latinos, support fell to 28%.

"Only 22% of white Catholics and 23% of Latino Catholics oppose the legal recognition of homosexual unions," the site reported, going on to note that opposition to marriage parity for gay and lesbian families was higher among Protestants." Full story here via Edge!

Gay Fla. Congressional candidate’s campaign signs vandalized

"Openly gay North Miami Commissioner and Congressional candidate Scott Galvin received a nasty surprise last week when he received word some half-dozen of his campaign signs had been defaced with the word "fag" spray-painted on them by an anonymous vandal.

Galvin said the incident surprised him, but doubts anyone with his opponents’ campaigns was involved. He has been open about his sexual orientation since his election to the North Miami City Council. And Galvin said it has never proven an issue until now.

Galvin admitted the vandalism may have had the reverse effect its perpetrator intended, granting further visibility to his historic campaign. He feels he has an "excellent opportunity" to win in the final weeks before the Democratic primary on Aug. 24." Full Story here via Edge!

Wicked Cool : Inception Star Tom Hardy: 'Of Course' I've Had Sex with Men

"Inception star Tom Hardy tells the Daily Mail that he's had sexual relations with men:

"The 32-year-old Inception star, who is engaged to British actress Charlotte Riley, 28, and also has a two-year-old son with a former girlfriend. But asked if he'd ever had any sexual relations with other men, the broody actor said: 'As a boy? Of course I have. I'm an actor for ****'s sake. 'I've played with everything and everyone. I love the form and the physicality, but now that I'm in my thirties, it doesn't do it for me. I'm done experimenting but there's plenty of stuff in a relationship with another man, especially gay men, that I need in my life. A lot of gay men get my thing for shoes. I have definite feminine qualities and a lot of gay men are incredibly masculine.'"

Reports of a music festival featuring Madonna in Malawi are false, the performer said on her web site, Raising Malawi.

Justin Bieber Joins Lady Gaga as Target of Westboro Baptist Church

Watch out, Justin Bieber, you're a target.

The 16-year-old Canadian pop star, who teenagers either undyingly love or massively loathe, has been singled out for protest by the notorious Westboro Baptist Church, just like his top-charting rival Lady Gaga.

When Bieber plays the Sprint Center on Wednesday night in Kansas City, fans can expect to see Westboro church members holding signs and issuing taunts. The church is known for picketing the funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan with signs reading "Thank God for Dead Soldiers" and "God Hates Fags" -- because they believe that as long as America countenances sin, American soldiers deserve to die. Only 10% of the Pentagon's 'DADT' Surveys Have Been Returned

Via Towleroad: "The Stars and Stripes blog reports that only about 10% of the 400,000 Pentagon surveys that were sent to troops canvassing them about the repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy have been returned:

"...gay rights groups have questioned the value of the survey, and the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network warned closeted gay troops against participating in the exercise. Even though the survey will be conducted by e-mail through an outside contractor, SLDN officials said that promise of anonymity wasn't enough of a guarantee of safety for troops who still could be kicked out under the 'don't ask, don't tell' law. Defense officials could not say whether that negative reaction has hurt response rates, but are urging everyone who received the survey to fill it out. A similar survey will be sent out to 150,000 military family members next month."

The deadline for the research is August 15."
