New Orleans Prepares for Southern Decadence 2009 & My 2008 Retrospective
If you have been reading this blog for some time you will know that my partner and I fell in love with New Orleans our very first time visiting several years ago. Since that day we have been going back every year, often twice per year and have attended Southern Decadence several times, we went to the first Mardi Gras post Katrina to show our support, and have gone on non event weekends just to enjoy all that NOLA has to offer.Unfortunately this year we will not be able to go for the first time in along time because both of our careers do not permit for time off at this time....however, if you are able to go and take in all that is this fine city, please do. Below are some highlights from previous blog posts that I want to share and although last year we had to evacuate it was worth going. We met several new friends last year and can't imagine not having them in our lives.
Here is my New Orleans 2008 retrospective:
The photos below are from a gentleman named Phillip Thomas who was so kind to let me use them. You can see more photos via his Facebook profile here. Also, if you do a search in this blog for New Orleans or NOLA you will see all the past videos and photos I have posted including our evacuation from hurricane Gustov in August. Just like New Orleans, their is no hurricane that will keep us away...we are heading back soon and we hope you will to!P.S. Click on any photo to enlarge. They look amazing in full size.

My Personal Photos and Videos of Southern Decadence and Evacuation 2008:

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This is what New Orleans is like just a couple of days before a major hurricane hits. The city that care forgot loves to keep the party going until the very last moment!!! | ||
Here is an ironic progression from a great time in the French Quarter for Southern Decadence to a bad time in traffic evacuating New Orleans. (Our flight was canceled so we had to drive 7 hours in traffic to Gulfport, Mississippi and take a flight to Chicago and finally to Boston.) At least we are safe and we are in fact laughing about it now! However we are watching closely as we love New Orleans and hope that it withstands major Gustov damage as they just can't take another bad blow, they really can't!

Wicked Good Read :: The GLBT community remembers Ted Kennedy

Notes from leading community members (locally and nationally) recall the late Senator as a lion-hearted advocate for LGBT issues.
"Yet, there was Teddy rising to the floor, bringing us to our feet, reminding us of what we could do and accomplish. That’s why his loss is so deep and so wide. He made everything possible, within reach and he embraced all of life. And that was a big part of the connection many of us felt." (Continue Reading-Source/Bay Windows)
Texas liquor board fires 3 over raid on gay bar

Texas’ liquor board fired two agents and a supervisor, disciplined two other supervisors and changed several policies in the wake of a raid at a gay bar that left a customer seriously injured and led to protests, officials announced Friday.
The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission said agent Christopher Aller and agent trainee Jason Chapman, who participated in the June 28 raid at the Rainbow Lounge, were fired Friday. Their supervisor, Sgt. Terry Parsons, was not at the Fort Worth bar that night but also was fired, effective Sept. 2.
Aller and Chapman failed to report that they used force when arresting the customer or that he was seriously injured, according to a report on the agency’s investigation released earlier this month. They also were accused of participating in the raid without their supervisor’s approval, disrupting the business during the raid and wearing improper attire, the report states. Via Towleroad: "Disney executives saw $$$ in the potential expansion of Miley Cyrus's tween audience to include gay men, and let the fan-made Fire Island "Party in the USA" video take off on YouTube rather than pull it over copyright issues, the NYT reports:
'I assumed it would be taken down pretty much immediately, particularly because of the music rights issue,' said David Fudge, a 27-year-old marketing executive at Esquire who made the video, titled 'Party in the Fire Island Pines.' But Disney left the ditty alone and it soon exploded in an underground way, collecting 200,000 views in just three days. Disney employees started e-mailing it to each other, and before long Mr. Fudge’s office telephone rang. On the other end: Rich Ross, the president of Disney Channels Worldwide. 'I was like, who?' Mr. Fudge said. 'He just said that he loved it and wanted to tell us that. He was extremely nice.' Mr. Ross declined to comment, but another Disney executive noted that the video (and the reaction to it) demonstrated how Ms. Cyrus was broadening her fan base beyond little girls." Wicked Touching :: Thousands flock to Kennedy wake in Dorchester
"Thousands more people flocked again today to the Kennedy Library, with many coming before dawn to wait in a line two hours long to pay their respects to Senator Edward M. Kennedy. The mourners came from across New England and beyond, shuffling slowly in a line eight-people wide that snaked back and forth through the parking lot of the Dorchester center. A dozen Boy Scouts helped pass out water to the waiting crowd and offered the elderly a steady arm or help with wheelchairs.
By mid-day, the crowd stretched more than a quarter of a mile, and those waiting expressed relief that the viewing had been extended by at least three hours, to 3 p.m.
The crowds, and a recent leg injury, did not deter Eddie Feeney, 50, who waited well over an hour to pay his respects and who hobbled up on crutches to sign the condolence book. Fenney, originally from Belfast, credited Kennedy with helping to quell the sectarian violence in Northern Ireland that had claimed the lives of Fenney's friends.
"I felt the need to come down and thank him personally,'' said Feeney, a Somerville construction worker. "It's the least I could do.'' (Continue Reading-Source)

July new US home sales up 9.6 percent

Sales of new homes surged 9.6 percent in July, another sign the housing market is climbing back from the historic bottom it reached early this year. Driven by falling prices, the fourth-straight monthly increase was greater than expected.
In a kind of Cash for Clunkers effect, homebuyers are rushing to take advantage of a federal tax credit that covers 10 percent of the home price, or up to $8,000, for first-time owners. Home sales must be completed by the end of November for buyers to qualify.
Builders and real estate agents are pressing Congress for that credit to be extended. If it isn’t, sales could reverse their upward trend. (Source)

Cash for Clunkers generates 700K new car sales

Cash for Clunkers generated nearly 700,000 new car sales and ended under its $3 billion budget, the Transportation Department said Wednesday.
Releasing final data, the government said dealers submitted 690,114 vouchers totaling $2.88 billion. New car sales through the program ended late Monday and dealers were allowed to submit paperwork to the government until late Tuesday.
Japanese automakers Toyota, Honda and Nissan accounted for 41 percent of the new vehicle sales, outpacing Detroit automakers General Motors, Ford and Chrysler, which had a share of nearly 39 percent. Toyota Motor Corp. led the industry with 19.4 percent of new sales, followed by General Motors Co. with 17.6 percent and Ford Motor Co. with 14.4 percent.
The Toyota Corolla was the most popular new vehicle purchased under the program, followed by the Honda Civic, Toyota Camry and Ford Focus. (Continue Reading-Source)
Wicked Ally :: Linda Ronstadt
"I had moved back to Tucson with my kids because I just thought it was quieter, and my family was there. But Tucson has turned out to be a very conservative place, and I didn’t want my kids coming home from school saying things like ‘That’s so gay.’ So we moved back to San Francisco, and I sent my kids to a school that actively taught that homophobic remarks are just… not OK, and my kids’ attitudes have changed as a result of it."Look, my kids are going to be able to form their own ideas, but at least I wanted them to be able to question things. My son is super pro-gay rights, and even though he has a girlfriend, I wanted him to know that as he emerged sexually, he’d be able to do whatever he wanted to do. You know, that it’s not something you have a choice over." - Pop and country music legend Linda Ronstadt, talking to Planet Out. It's a great interview. (Source-Joe My God)

Utah governor: No special rights for gay people

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert said Thursday that discriminating against gay people shouldn’t be illegal, although he would prefer it if everyone were treated with respect.
